I got myself a DIR-655 today and I was messing around in the Advanced Wireless Settings tab, it has an adjustable option that is labeled "Transmit Power".

I tried to research it a bit but couldn't find anything in the on-board support system, the DLink website or through a google search.

I am thinking the higher level (its default setting is "High", which is the maximum) the farther the signal will broadcast. However, I would also think this would reduce the router's life vs the Medium and Low settings.

I am wondering, would setting the power to the lowest possible level (while still maintaining the coverage I want) result in an extended lifespan for the router vs keeping it at the highest setting?

    Peace

yes, using a lower setting will prolong the life of the router. the wireless chip won't have to transmit as far, so less power is used.

my linksys WRT54GS is running dd-wrt firmware, and i increased the transmit power nearly 4x the original. much better signal, but the wireless broadcom chip runs way hotter. adding a heatsink and a fan keeps it cool now.
