I have two drives on the same IDE secondary channel. The master is a cd rom will goto DMA mode but the cd burner will not. I change it to DMA but it goes back to PIO mode. I think it is a sony burner. Why is this and how do I get to stay in DMA mode.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Try the CD burner as master, by itself, and see if it will DMA.
Then add the CD as slave, see what happens.
If you are losing the DMA you may want to junk the CD or redesign your IDE assignments so the two are not on the same controller.
(Or just junk the CD! Even a new DVDrom is dirt-cheap affordable)
    Regards
