i have this usb wireless thing, and it got hot frequently, so i cracked open its cover. and is it ok if i just leave it without its case? its just bare, with the chip and stuff showing? this wouldnt harm it in any way right? and im also wondering if this would be the same for like a computer hard drive or hardware.

What USB thing is it? I don't think that cracking open the case is a good thing.

it will still work but don't let any any metal touch it or you might fry your system. why not drill some small holes in the casing & put it back together?

anytime I have a part that get's real hot, I always try and put a fan blowing on it. I do it with external drives, battery chargers etc. Taking the cover off probably isn't going to cool it down, unless you have air blowing on it. Even a small fan will bring the temp down.
