I have that same setup, without an Xbox, and it has been great the 17 months that I have had it.

Your Xbox should work with it.

remember, once you switch your firmware from linksys to dd-wrt, your warranty is gone. and if you're going to overclock (which is available when dd-wrt is on the router), you'll need to get some internal cooling; some ram heatsinks for the ram, and a vga heatsink for the broadcom chip. a fan is optional.

you won't be disappointed with dd-wrt. you only flash the router; modem stays as is.

thanks for the help. i didnt know that you could overclock a router. will that provide better signal strength or what?

you can get better signal. dd-wrt allows you to change the wireless power output. you will have to find the right amount because too much can have signal interference.

the "safe" amount on no cooling is about 84mW. once you add proper cooling you can basically run the max 251mW, but you won't need that much. my WRT54GS v5 is pushing 100mW and on max (250mhz) overclock, and it's running way better than the linksys firmware. more responsive, and nearly full connection all over the house, including garage (has 39% signal quality).

That sounds great. i will look into that. but is it worth it? will it be a big boost or just a few percentage point? also my internet is 8mbit down and 2mbit up but i cant ever get upload speeds more than 80 or 90kbs. will this help my upload speed at all? i always have to stop or slow my uploading when i use live or browse the internet because it always slows things down. would that be because of a crappy modem or not buying enough upload speed from my isp?

well worth it, even if it's just daily surf/email. i'd say it's about a 30-40% increase, depending on how you configure; wireless spots that were dead or low, i can get good/very good now. it is noticeable. try out the stock linksys firmware for a day, then try dd-wrt.

as for the down/up speed, i'm stuck like you. it may be configuration of the computer, configuration of the router, the modem, ISP; lots of factors to put in.

i just bought the stuff a few minutes ago. i should have it by Thursday or Friday. i just went down to my room to check my email and i couldn't connect to the internet. so i am using the family computer. a reliable signal will be nice. and about upload speeds. i have it configured. ports forwarded and firewall setup correctly. hopefully its just the modem i have and will improve with my new stuff. thanks for all your help.

post back when you get your new setup.

i believe sammorris has the GL router with dd-wrt on it (according to his comp specs). ask him on how he likes it.

my WRT54GS is on v24 rc6.2, and it's running with no problems. it's your call, basically.

start out on stable v23, then if you want, you can move up to v24 rc6.2.

i think you should be able to switch firmwares easily; not too sure as i only upgraded.

ok i got my stuff today and i set everything up and flashed the firmware. the only problems i am having are with static ip and port forwarding. i can only get my computer to connect to the internet when i use automatic settings instead of static. but i need to forward some ports for my xbox and torrents. how can i set that up?

port forwarding and static ip setup HERE

may look different, depending on what version of dd-wrt.
