I just purchased a HP dvd 556s external burner. I am backing up some of my DVD's and am trying to pick a good burn speed. I will be using 16x Verbatim DVD-R media.

I've read that you don't want to go below half the speed of the disc when burning DVD's, but my burner's max speed is exactly half, 8x. I am uncertain, but I don't think it would be good to burn at the drives maximum capable speed ALL THE TIME.

Could anyone recommend a good, reliable burn speed? Yeah, its a stupid question, ha.

x8 would be fine imho :)

Verbatim are a really good disc so you should be alright to burn at max speed using good media and latest firmware normally.
