Not sure why the hard drive shows DMA on and the burner shows DMA off.

A quick way to check is to download and run ImgBurn.
Click Tools > Reset DMA and it will either tell you it has reset it and reboot or that it doesn't apply.

Infers that it's a disk error but it would be odd to see that on a CD.

Means that the burner can't figure out the correct burning strategy for the media.
It might be the media or it might be that the burner needs a firmware update.

You can check for an update by running ImgBurn and clicking 'Write files/folders to disc' > Tools > Drive > Check for firmware updates...

Run ImgBurn, Write files/folders to disc.
On the next screen check the box for 'Test mode' and insert a CD-R.
Burn your compilation and save the log file (it's on-screen while ImgBurn is running).
Copy and paste that log on the ImgBurn forum.

    http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?/forum/6-imgburn-support/

    Remember to uncheck Test mode.
