HI I just did the xclamp fix threw the back of the metal case with 2 metal and 1 nylon under the motherboard and one metal and nylon above. I put a thin layer of ArticSilcer 5 on about as thin as suran rap. The heatsink gets really hot. The fans sound like they are taking off. If I push on the heatsink the fans calm down a bit but start up after I stop pushing. The screws are as tight as they can go. Do you think I should add some more artic silver? It usually works for 1 minute before 2 red rings and then one time it gave me three red rings for thirty seconds then to 2. Please Help
can you take a pic for us? you should about the size of a grain of rice of thermal compound, re-thighten your screws, and send some pics if you are able to specifically of how much compound you use and the completed project focusing on the cpu and gpu.
Try using just one washer under the cpu and gpu heatsink. i have fixed over ten rrods and found that my best method was to use just one washer not two on top of mobo. the problem could well be your heat sinks are too high see. let me know how you get on and good luck. i usually use standard washers under cpu heatstake and spring washers under gpu. all the best luck dont give up!
also after you have tightened washers power up your 360 with your fan disconnected. let it heat up until you get two red lights. leave it on two for about two mins with the 2 red lights and then turn it off and leave it for about half an hour. that will help re flow the solder. good luck.
reflow ?? wtf ,what's a soldering iron for, since when was lead based solder used for reflowing, you'd need a dam site more than good luck
actually you should let it heat up anywhere from 5 to 10 min from alot of tuts i have seen. i accidently had my heatsink turned sideways and that made mine mess up, luckily someone caught it when i posted pics, so thats why i suggest posting pics.
my xbox goes to 2 red lights and completely stops making noise at all (fans go off and all) is leaving it like this for 2 or 3 minutes what you're talking about when u say to overheat and reflow?
the PROPER way to do an xclamp fix (or at least what works for me) is too replace the xclamps with nuts, bolts and washers (i use 1nylon, 1metal for top and bottom of the motherboard), a bead of Arctic Silver (not too much not too little) ... make sure BOTH heatsinks are secured tightly (hope u did both - not jus 1) ... LEAVE THE FAN DISCONNECTED and power up the motherboard ... should take about 3 or 4 minutes for it too overheat (2 red lights), this will cause any shotty solder connections to reflow - now turn off or unplug the motherboard and put ur 360 back together (or atleast reconnect ur fan and plastic airflow cap) ... let ur system cool for atleast a half hour than try it out ... u ask me ur problem lies at the bottom of your motherboard, use 1 metal washer instead of 2 ... thats probably why your fans go ape shit if ur not pressing down on your heatsinks ... 2washers arent holding your heatsinks close enoughto the cpu/gpu ... also, again, did you perform the fix on BOTH heatsinks (replacing both XClamps)? ur 1st post sounds like ur refering too 1 heatsink instead of 2 ... check out this tutorial by lawdawg - follow it to the letter and u should be good: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ESJUVC50
I was thinking aboue aking a washer away I will try that thanks. I also put a bit more artic silver 5 on because when I lifted up the heatsink before I could see the chip a bit and the artic silver was melted a bit. I know I had to get three redrings so I would wait untill it got two redrings then turn off and on the xbox until I had 10 minutes of 3 redrings. I heard from another user to always put the fan on top of the big heat sink. The error code I get with the two redrings is 0012.
yes when you let it heat up you have to put a fan on the cpu so it stays cool, while at the same time not letting it blow on the gpu, you want the gpu very hot. if the cpu gets too hot (the tall heatsink) it will turn off because it knows it is overheating, thats why you keep that cpu cool, so you can burn it up without it knowing it.
I think may have to give up on my 360 I have been working on it for a month and now it gives me a different error a network interface error.I am to fed up with I'm going to sell it and get another buy another broken one. Anyone know of a good place to buy them?I already know kijiji and ebay,
I did the fix last night and am still getting the RROD. I have gone over the steps and feel that I have done everything correctly. The reason for post and only place I question myself is when I put on the silver thermal compound it was very thin as compared to what I have seen on YouTube and such. I also did not get the chips spick and span but have seen that I may not necessarily need to. I did do the overheat and then I mildly torque down the heat sinks as not to break anything they seem to be pretty tight all I have is a 3/8 ratchet so if I wanted to I can crank the hell out of them if need be. Should I just take it all apart and retry the same way or is there something I could pay more mind to this time around?
bothchips need to be spic and span! you need to be able to see yourself cut your hair so clean. apply a thin coating of artic silver, and get rid of the ratchet, only use a screwdriver, and make sure they are very tight but dont break anything. sounds like you need to clean of that chip first and foremost. then make sure you let it heat up gpu, while keeping the cpu cool at least 20 min then let it coo down for at least 30 min. no shortcuts! to do that put a fan of some sort (house fan) directly on the cpu, but make sure the gpu gets nice and toasty this is to make the xbox think it is running cool. report back with what you find out after this fix.
