my xbox recently started to freeze during game play. i have tryed everything i could find on the web. is there anything i could do or should i try to trade it in.
It is most, likely an overheating problem. Try putting your 360 in a more ventalated area, or buy an intercooler or cooling station. I reccomend you fix this fast, since overheating can lead to the RRoD
dont use the intercooler, it will do more damage than good! chances are it will go rrod, i just sent one of my 360's to m$ for the same thing your started with, after 5 weeks of it making a beep and freezing up it went rrod. oh yeah, here look at how cool the intercooler keeps your system. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/455546
Well i just got off the phone with xbox customer service. I researched this problem quite a bit and figured since i was an active member on this forum i'd post my issue. There was a lot of ghosting when i was trying to play turok so it looks like a dvd laser problem but you cant access the guide or anything so it's probably a gpu problem. Anyway here's the story. I had a decent game of halo and i was showing my friend the video in theatre mode and my 360 froze up. Mind you guys I bought a brand new elite console in march or april of this year. I haven't had any problems until yesterday. Anyway I called up xbox customer service and argued with the guy about if the system is overheating. After a minute Mr. pakistan confirmed my address and told me if there were any signs of tampering they would just send my console back (i've never had anyone say that to me yet). So now it's time to play the waiting game. I'll document the serial number and time it takes to repair the console and let you guys know. In the mean time i'll probably buy another broken rrod console and do the normal mods to it. I've never had a console act like this, and to think out of the 12 or so 360's i've had, the most annoying one is the so called "flagship model". Console mfr date 2008-03-02 175W psu, 65nm falcon mb It just sickens me... Anyway i'll let you guys know how it turns out.
My xbox froze maybe twice before I got the RROD on the same day. I never had a problem before and it happened about five minutes after I turned it on.
Yeah it's been running for 5 hours straight now. I went out and got a thermometer with a probe and i started reading temps. The temp is 104.2 playing a dvd, and the temp running halo 3 is 108.7. It seems to freeze when there's any flash, probably something to do with the graphic processor or even the cpu. It ran 2 dvd's perfect non stop without freezing which makes me think it's the cpu. First i thought if it was a heat issue i could easily fix it but for sure i'll send it in. This is supposed to be their solution to the rrod and obviously it's far from a solution. I doubt it's overheating i would be getting hotter exhaust temps. I tested my main xbox to kind of compare the exhaust temps with the actual temps. CPU runs at.........118F........122F - with game Board runs at.......106F........109F - with game Exhaust temp is....99.7F.......102.7F - with game This confirms the 360 isn't overheating, just another shit design from microsoft. I haven't repaired a falcon console before or even thought there was a need to. Anyway we'll see what they say, i've never taken it apart so that's not an issue, this is just a bs thing i have to go through. I've decided in the meantime i'm going to buy another elite, and mod it when i get my refurbished 360 back. I'll let you guys know the verdict from ms when i get it.
My mod I did 3 months ago is cutting out the metal grill case, the oposite side of the Hard rive, I cut out ONLY the area containint the holes. Also cut out the back side grill , HOLES only. Since then My temps have gone down ALOT. More air flow in, more air flow out. Since then I have never had an issue. Also have a labtop cooloer underneath, and my 360 runs real cool after 5 hours of gaming on halo. I opened the console and the metal case was barely hot, the CPU heatsink itself was more then cool and the GPU was a tad bit warm. I wish I could take pics and post everything but I got this idea from 2 diff utube videos.
Yeah i've heard of doing that before, though this is the 360 i was planning on leaving stock. After talking to a buddy of mine he confirmed it's the ram coming off the board from high temps. He says he repaired his elite the other night because he fell asleep with it on . The penny fix is all that would need to be done. I'm going to take my chances sending it off to ms though, they should be able to reflow the board and then when i get it back i'll mod it out.
I had problems recently with GTA4 freezing up, both the backup and the original game disk. I have a 360 elite, but I also tried both game disks in other xbox 360's and they worked ok. I ended up cleaning the dvd laser. GTA4 works perfect now. However, this was the only game that would freeze on me.
Wow was i wrong... after 3 hours of being on playing gta4 my modded elite runs at 86.3F. I also stuck the probe into the cpu heatsink and only read 98.6F ....well it must be healthy. BTW room temp was 75.8F. Mods for the elite -Removed metal mesh from behind the fans -Blue Talismoon Fans, stock connection -Bue Xcm V2 fans One of the xcm fans sits right on top of the extension from the gpu. so i think the gpu is just above room temp. So we'll see how long this lasts, it runs cooler than my original xbox that i've left on for over a month straight. You can feel air being sucked in from every little hole in that case so the xcm fans are doing their job. If anybody else wants to log their results that would be more than helpful. If anybody gets better results than me send me a pm.
i used something that looks like this It's an oven thermometer that has a probe. If you stick the probe in where the metal mesh behind the fans is that's how i let it sit for a few hours. I kept checking it like every 30 minutes. After 3 hours passed i turned off the system and pushed the probe further in so it would touch the heatsink. Mind you i have a clear window and a clear air tunnel so i could see what i was doing. Either way i think this is as cool as this xbox is going to get without as5 (i don't think it really needs as5). Anyway let me know how hot it gets, there should be a little switch on the back that you can change from celcius to fahrenheit. Try to get the readings in fahrenheit. Thanks
I want to add more results from a pre-hdmi xbox i painted black and did the fan mod to. This xbox also has the cpu and gpu xclamp replacement mod with as5 applied. Only the stock fan with the tin foil seal method. 94.5F at idle for an hour and a half 96.8F durring gameplay for 20 minutes after the idle time 98.9-99.1F for the cpu heatsink after the console was turned off
I'm kind of mad and laughing at the same time....this xbox is messed up already. I noticed it when i went to test a hdd i just modded, turned on the 360 and it went to the dash fine, but it's having some serious problems with textures. I'm guessing this is what it was sent in for. So it's xclamp and as5 time then more testing. I'll let you guys know how it goes... no sending this one back to ms... with the cut case i'm sure it's not going to make it through inspection. ------------------------------------------------------ I typed that about 2 hours ago. I got the 360 back to mapping textures again by laying it flat instead of vertical. It doesn't suprise me that this would fix the problem. Anyway i'm getting heatsinks for the ram, and doing the xclamp replacement to see if i can fix this thing for good.
The elite is now completely fixed and running perfect. The As5 seemed to make a hell of a lot of difference. I took off the gpu heatsink and saw that the MS cheap heatsink paste/clay was barely making a connection with the die. I should have taken a picture of it, it looked like 80% of the processors die was uncovered and shiny. Anyway when i fired it back up everything was golden. I still overheated the gpu to make sure this problem wasn't going to come back. I'm thinking about putting more leds in it, maybe a custom cut dvd top, and doing the cpu xclamp replacement as well (mainly to replace the heatsink compound). I'll let you guys know the results, and if it forms ice from overcooling lol. Oh and i do plan on selling this xbox, as i kind of got another project idea in my head that will blend in better (no clear window). That's after i sell the halo edition with orange leds of course. Edit: I forgot to mention i added one of the older videochip heatsinks from the original xbox's to the hana scaler chip on my elite. I'm sure it will make some difference even if it's not noticeable.
Sweet Jebus! I've had my 360 since xmas time of 2006 and never had a single problem. Now as of 2 days ago, it beeps once, then freezes. I downloaded that Mirror's Edge demo and played it, I can get perhaps 5 good minutes out of the game before it beeps and freeze's again. I'm assuming my xbox being almost 2 years old means I wont be protected by any warranty, and from reading this forum I'm starting to get the idea they don't really care to fix it much anyways. I will say I HIGHLY doubt moving my box around will fix the issue as it is in a wide open space, and there is nothing generating heat around it. Ambient temp in house stays around 72-75F. Could this still be an overheating issue and if so, why now after 2 years of flawless service? My box is stock and I can send it in for repairs although I'm sure it's not gonna be cheap if I have no warranty... So what I really want is some advice. Thanks in advance.
