I have seen these drives on eBay what are they used for, I am looking to get a 360 for xmas and I was wondering do you swap the original 360 drive with this so that you dont need to flash the 360 drive yourself ?

No. The shd-162c is a pc drive that, when flashed with the right firmware, will extract the ss, dmi, and pfi from an original game disc.

When this drive is used with a program like XBC or Schtrom, it can create a patched, ready to burn iso.

However, it is not a burner, so you'll still need one along with this drive.

Ok now I am completely confused, I thought when using Schtrom to backup a game Schtrom did all this for you I didnt relise you needed a special drive to read the original game, I already have a Pioneer 111D drive for writing the disks would this drive not also work for reading an original game, or would I need this drive from eBay.

you can either use the shd-162c drive or if you have your 360 connected to the pc to extract you will not need this although it is handy. it is just used to extract the game image as your pc dvd drive unless the shd-162c with the updated firmware will not be able to do this.

    Really big Noob question

Do you need to extract the 360 game with the dvd drive from the Xbox or can it be done all on the computer. I don't have a sata connector and had to borrow a friends computer to flash my xbox. I will look into buying a pci sata card if required. Can this be done by just using the computer burner drive or do I need to take my xbox apart connect it to the pc and use that

    Thanks

Btw I am using V3.0Schtrom360Xtract to rip from the orginal 360 game. Can't get the drive to show up using my current dvd burner. Tried to select the drive letter under custom drive but still won't show up on main page of the app. Please help no idea how to get this to work.

You can do it all on the pc providing you have the samsung shd-162c drive with the kreon firmware installed. these drives can be found on ebay for around £20. If your from the u.k. or for around $50 if your from the u.s.
    hope this helps

I get all kind of issues when I try to rip 360 games.

    Does not work with

    1) V3.1Schtrom360Xtract or
    2) xbox backup creator V 2.1.

I am connecting my drive directly to the PC. I flashed it using 360 Toolbox 3.0. I get the xbox drive into Modeb and it sees the drive in Windows. When I use Xbox Backup creater I says my drive (Hitachi GDR 3120L Rom 78 FK) does not read sepearations or something. When I use 360xtract it does not even see the drive. My drive is in xbox Backup creater as one of the roms supported. Why isn't this working.

Any suggestions Need Help feeling lost

you cant rip the game witjout one of these drives that are mentioned unless you use the xbox360 drive or the hotswap method , the advice given is good and it is the easiest way using a dvd drive flashed with kreon firmware.

There are 3 general ways to make a backup of your original 360 game.

    - hotswap
    - 360 drive
    - samsung sh-d162c or sh-d163a

The problem is that a regular pc drive can not read the ss, dmi, and pfi from an original game disc. And this information is necessary.

The hotswap method can be done with any pc dvd drive. This method will create an iso of the game. But you will still need to download the ss, dmi, and pfi from somewhere online and then inject it into the iso before burning. Contrary to what most think... you don't have to tear apart the pc drive to swap. You can eject the tray with an unrolled paperclip. The trick is to then close the tray with enough force to lock it. It is quite easy.

The 360 drive method requires you to plug your 360 drive into your pc. The drive must be removed from the 360 (unless you use a $70+ Blaster). Once connected to the pc, you can then use either Xbox Backup Creater or Schtrom. Both programs will automatically make your backup with all the information injected. Then you just burn.

The samsung is the most popular method. This is a regular pc dvd drive which, when flashed with a third party firmware, will be able to read the ss, dmi, and pfi from the original disc and still functions as a pc drive. They are easily found overseas and are cheap. If you're in the US then you'll need to order one. They are also on Ebay with some US sellers. Many people fear Ebay. But if you purchase and pay through Paypal then your guaranteed to receive it or your money is refunded. I ordered my drive from Australia and it was 10 days from the auctions end to it arriving at my door here in Pennsylvania.

If you're going to make your own backups and not download them then I'd suggest getting the samsung. It's cheaper than the Blaster and MUCH easier then the hotswap method.

*** do note that the samsung is just a dvd rom and you will still need a burner ***
