I have just successfully softmodded my xbox with the stock hd. I was thinking about upgrading to a bigger one but I'm not sure if the one I'm looking at would be compatable. Here is the link to it. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1647097&sku=THD-160A2

The other thing I want to upgrade is my DVD drive because it doesn't seem to want to read DVD-R's or CD-R's. Does the new DVD drive have to be a specific type? Or will something like this work? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1903249&CatId=88

    Thanks.

http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list is a compatibility list of lockable xbox hard drives...

Also ive used Seagate 160GB quite often in some of my installs and it has worked flawlessly... ive used the 7200.8 version but I do not see why this would not work either. You should be fine :)

As for the DVD ROM, I am not 100% sure on that. Check out these tutorials they may help you a bit.

Or you could try to get your current XBOX DVD Rom replaced for about $40 - $50 and or a new laser installed for $20 - $40 ... thats always an option.
