I am wanting to upgrade my Xbox hard drive to a 120 GB hard drive i modded my xbox with unleashed x. i was looking on the internet for hard drives that were already formated with the xbox file system at xbox-modchips.com. those hard drives already come unlocked and it says all that i would have to do is put it in my xbox and lock it. i think i can do it with the tools on my unleashed x but i looked around and i found that if my hard drive isnt locked it wont boot up. i was wondering if there was a way that i could access my modded dashboard to lock it.

After reading your post, I was a little confused, so I went to the site mentioned and read and yeah that's xactly what you do if and only if your xbox is modded, as in chipped. A softmodded box uses an exploit to work around the dashboard, but everything else works like normall, well mostly. You can replace the HDD in a softmodded case (I did), except there is a specific procedure that you have to follow including the all important eeprom file (which is used to lock the HDD to your xbox) Chipped boxes don't need it, so in that case all you do is slap the new HDD in and then using the chip lock the drive and away you go.

Well again it depends on how you're modded. For the sake of argument I'll assume you are or will softmod. Then the best procedure is here:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/533828

This procedure works well, and yes you have to use your computer for this mod. The reason is because the HDD building is done through the PC. The only time your console comes in play is at the end when you put in your locked HDD and viola more storage space.

Don't.. the psu will be seriously overloaded and most likely will fry. If you get lucky all you will get is a puff of smoke as the psu dies.. I have seen them set on fire with waaaaayyy to many leds like that installed.. You know that running modified electrical equipment voids your properties fire insurance don't you? (I do even though I am a fully qualified electronics engineer.. every item in my house is tested and certified.. by me.. for my insurance)

Most of the extreme led mods you see are run from a seperate PSU.. usually an old at/atx pc unit stashed away somewhere.

Just about any HDD will do, but on a softmod it is locked to just that mobo..

ok kewl i was wondering bout the leads mod because i had found a web site that i would send 2 to do the mod i believe through acid mods i was'nt going to do it myself...as far as the hard drive i don't believe it actually has a system loaded on it at the moment...the led mod i had seen a video on youtube of a few that had been modded with the leds that was sound activated...i need to check more into it buti would never do anything that was'nt safe know what i mean...appreciate the heads up i am not as experienced as you in it but i went to school for electronics engineering so i know the basics i guess you can say i know it not to played around with lightly some electronics stuff can get pretty nasty i guess you can say... i need to check if the site comes with a quality guarantee if you know what i mean.... My last question is if there is a good guide i can use for setting up my harddrive i know there should be i will continue reading i just never done anything like this kinda modding before onlything i have done is with the pspi have done an led mod on it...thnx for your advice and any further help you might be able to give me it is very much appreciated..

    wolfcav92,
Please read my second post in this thread. That procedure is real good and the one I used.

You'll have to softmod after the hard drive is done formatting.

Actually either way works. I softmodded first then at a later date upgraded HDD. Since you have the new HDD it isn't necessary though, although some people believe running the procedure to get the eeprom is infact softmodding, tomato, tomato (it doesn't work as well typing it instead of speaking it) :)

Yes it does.. you have the choice to do a "stock" install with a large drive, and then softmod.. or to "clone" an already modded drive. Fun fun fun.. both work equally well. Whatever.. the first step is always softmod to get that pesky eeprom data off the box and backed up on your PC.. no if's or but's.. it's a tiny file so back it up in lots of places.. I even stick them on mp3 disks and other places.. it is your lifeline if your hdd craps out, or your mobo at any time in the future.

Only thing I can see that could throw a spanner into the clone modded drive procedure is one slight difference in the xbox kernal observed a long time ago.. The early kernel versions had the "bootable" flag set on the C: partition where later versions don't. (was this an attempt by M$ to sink the early unsafe audio exploit?) I haven't ever tested to see if it is checked on boot, or whether the kernel just automatically looks for a bootable dvd followed by the C: label. That could be the reason for the old error16 halo2 trick working or not as the case may be.. but TBH.. after all these years I don't care one way or another.

No man your missing it. You have to burn an ISO that in turn makes the disk a boot disk. A lot of your work is done from your pc. Quick and simple you softmod which gives you your eeprom file. You download and install xboxhdm on your pc, you ftp your bin file to the location within the xboxhdm file structure. You ftp your C: contents to the location within the xboxhdm file structure. You create the two directories (UDATA, TDATA) with in the E: subfolder within the xboxhdm file structure. Remember all this is being done on your pc. Then you run the little batch file that creates the ISO (which is basically a bootdisk burn image). Then you put a CDR or DVD-R and using a burn program double click the ISO file you created and burn it. Then you leave the disk in the drive, turn off your pc, disable all other HDDs and set the new drive in primary as master or CS. Turn on the PC, it boots the xboxhdm, follow the prompts to build your drive, then follow the instructions to lock your drive. Then remove it and put in your xbox and away you go. This procedure tells you all I just typed in a more clear and concise way. Use it and you won't have problems.

Remember just having those files is nothing, putting a drive into a softmodded xbox doesn't work. You have to build your drive and then install the eeprom file onto it and then lock it and then put it in the xbox (xboxhdm does all of those things for you) The eeprom file is basically a password program that the console matches passwords to boot. That is why you got the service prompt, you can't just put a HDD in and expect it to work. Now if you shell out the money for a chip, then the procedure is super easy.
