I DID have the softmod installed on my Xbox, I bought it off a friend and it was modded to play copies etc. I'm not sure what mod it was but I think it was Evosoft.
However, I've basically piddled about with it trying to get it to read an audio CD, and instead of 'restore mod backup' I chose 'restore MS Backup' by mistake.

The Xbox is back at its original state, I hope, BUT it won't play any game at all, as when I turn it on it pops up with a message, 'Xbox live is updating your system, please do not turn off your Xbox.' Followed by ' XBox live is not responding' ( or similar. )

Is there a way of connecting this to the internet and downloading this 'update', in order to get the Xbox to a useable state?
Damn I wish I hadn't messed with it!!

    Thanks

ok well this message means that you are not in fact completely disableing the dash.

pop in splinter cell, mechassault, etc.
choose switch soft mod on/off or remove softmod from the list

    this will fix the prob

if you are modding the dashes automatically disable the microsoft dash so that you cant create xbox live 2 months, 3 months, 12 months, etc.

this is the hackers way of tring to keep you from modding games on live and cheating players

if you want to cheat then say, take halo 2
    ftp maps
    switch softmod off
    create 2 month
    play
    get banned
    switch softmod on

So you're saying I don't have to buy an action replay and so on, and just putting an original splinter cell in will prompt me with something?

Would you be able to explain in a bit more detail, as I've never done this before, thanks

well first see if the friend who u got the xbox from has these items, then if he doesnt then buying all these things is one way to solve the problem

If you have an AR then transfer a file to it called udata or something, u can get a tut on softmoding from this website, then buy splinter cell and follow my other post's instructions.

hope this is more detailed and easier to understand if it isn't pop another question an ill see if i can help

thanks 1337moder, you've been a good help. I'm looking at a splinter cell game / memory card with savegame on ebay. I'll give something like that a try if I have no joy.

wasted05, I thought you can't ftp unless the box is softmodded already?

If I'm wrong, ehat are the ftp details?

    Thanks guys

Well I can't ftp for love nore money. It won't let me ping it for a start. :(

It plays original games I have now discovered, and my old saves are there too.

Would it be safe to assume that somewhere on the drive is the hacked savegame that was used to softmod it? If so could I just put any of the magic games ( Splinter Cell, Mechassault etc. ) in the drive and load up the hacked savegame? I'm guessing here as the XBOX was softmodded before I go hold of it.

Thing is, I have no access to dashboard to copy them anywhere, you know what I mean? In fact I have no mem-card, I was just hoping I could get away with popping the game in and seeing if the saves were on the HD still.

If the softmod saves are still on the XBOX, then loading up "Splinter Cell" and choosing load mission, then loading Linux profile, going to checkpoints and pressing A should load up the installer. Personally, I think it would have been easier had you kept a full backup of your system on your PC when you had the softmod, but nevermind. But what to do is

    - Download the latest version of the Microsoft dashboard : http://freakyhosting.be/ms-c-hosted-by-pirrup.rar

    Use WinRAR to extract it.

    - Download an FTP client : FlashFXP : http://www.download.com/FlashFXP/3000-2160-10037696.html?part=dl-FlashFXP&subj=dl&tag=button

-FTP to your Xbox by launching the softmod installer via Splinter Cell (this opens up a temporary FTP link between you and your Xbox)

On flashfxp, click I agree to the trial box, and then press F8 (quick connect)

Server or URL : This is your Xbox's IP address which can be found on the bottom left hand corner of the softmod installer.

    Username : XBOX
    Password : xbox
(These are the default login credentials)

The rest can be left alone. If you all the details are correct, click connect and you should be greeted with several drive letters on the right hand side.

    Double click on C
Now, on the left hand side, navigate to where the microsoft dashboard is (the one you just extracted with WinRAR)
And they should look similar to those on the right hand side.

Now highlight all the files on the left hand side, and drag them to the right (if prompted to overwrite files, choose "Yes".)

Once the transfer has completed, turn off your Xbox and turn it back on. If all has gone well, your Xbox should be restored to it's retail state (don't worry, saved games, music etc. is still there)

If you would like to re-softmod your Xbox, follow this guide : http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/311710

But you can miss out the first seven steps as this simply covers the process of actually placing the softmod saves onto your Xbox, which I am assuming are already on your Xbox.

Let me know how you get on.

    -Mike
