So every since I installed a mod chip (smartxx) my xbox has been restarting randomly. It doesn't seem to coincide with anything sometimes it acts up bunch at one time sometimes its every few hours. I'm no hardware expert so I'm just guessing maybe it's overheating and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what to do or how to diagnose the problem.

It could be heat, but im guessing its a bad solder job. Check your bt wire and if that doesnt fix it, you D0.

I have a solderless adapter so its not that. I'm not sure what the bt wire is do you mean the D0 wire. I also talked to a few friends of mine who said it might be the power supply.

well do u have a 1.6 because that uses the power cord not the D0 for the power it might be moving or a bad connection on the hook.also go into your dashboard settings and turn your fan up....

Did you solder your chip or is it solderless?? You can't rule out much of anything at this point but if it were heat the Xbox would usually just lock up... Here is something you could do, remove your powersupply and on the bottom of the PSU check the two joints where the power connector is, make sure they are nice and shiny and not smoke black. Remember when they had a recall on the power cables, that was all Microsoft BS, they were just trying to cover there asses by sending us a couple measily cables. There were a few isolated incidents were some Xbox's were just catching on fire due to these defective solder joints underneath the powersupply. I removed my powersupply and resoldered the two joints just to avoid something like that from occuring.. If that doesn't do it then check the bt wire like some of the fellas just mentioned..

Usually when you wiggle the power cable you hear a popping sound coming from the back of the Xbox, that's the two loose joints underneath the powersupply due to poor soldering..

I have the 1.5 xbox version and this solderless adapter "http://www.xbox-modchips.com/xenium-solderless-adapter.htm"
By locking up do you mean just freezing because its not doing that it just shuts off randomly without warning. I've been using Avalaunch as a dashboard but only because thats what it boots up to,I'm really not sure how to change it but anyway is unleashX the only dashboard that has the fan option or is it available in Avalaunch or evox.

i believe avalaunch has the fan option aswell but it is just a suggestion and might not be the problem....

You could try buying a new power supply from llama.

If it's overheating it will freeze and the front led will either be solid or flashing orange.
Best guess is the power cord/connector..followed (if it's a foxlink psu) with the varistor on the psu panel.
I don't like solderless adapters, they cause all kinds of weird problems..check the install carefully.

sorry its been a while since a reply to all who are still subscribed to this thread, I have made some headway though, its not overheating and definitely has something to do with the power cord connection. The reason I know this is because I have temporarily stopped the shutdowns by wrapping the cord around the xbox going over the top first, though I am the kind of person that can live with ghetto rigged things I would still like to know what part I would have to replace to get this fixed when I've got the cash.

Well you could first try and fix the cheap thing, replace the power cable, it should be about 5 bucks at a Gamestop see if that fixes it, and if doesnt, replace the power supply.
