I already did the xclamp replacement fix for 3rrod and I've been having problems with my xbox again most of the time when I turn it on the fans are very quietly running and there are no lights flashing on the ring, no video etc. Some of the time I get the 3rrod and sometimes still I get it to actually turn on and work and play as needed. So now i've been trying to adjust the xclamps, thinking theyre making the board flex incorrectly so I basically redo the whole process. I'm on the step after you put the heatsinks back in and screw them in with the new screws. I connected the dvd drive and the power button, plugged in video and power and hit the power button. The fans are disconnected and I get the 2 red lights on the left side within seconds. I feel the heatsinks and they aren't even warm. I wait two minutes and still not even warm. I try connecting the fans again and hit the power button, the fans come on low, then very high when the 2 red lights come on, then they just turn off. What is wrong with my xbox? I can't do the "baking trick" to get it to overheat and I can't even power it on normally. I did everything correctly.
thank you for the detailed question, it helps us resolve issues like this. i highly suggest you use this guide in reference to what i am saying, i find it to be the most accurate, i have had a 100% success rate with it. So firstly let me explain how the heatsinks work, just so we are on the same page. the cpu heatsink is very important, because it controls the fans and the shutoff point for the xbox. when that cpu gets hot, its speeds up the fans, when it gets dangerously hot it will shut down completely. the 2 lights may be on, but thats all thats prolly running. it sounds like to me first off, that you need to check your thermal compound. this is what it should look like when you put it on, this is what it should look like when you spread it out, before the overheating process, you should have a gpu, with a heatsink only hand tightened, and a cpu with a heatsink screwdriver tightened. plug your fans in (just so you can hear them) then cover up the gpu heatsink so it gets blazing hot, use 3-4 cds that are junk, because you want to keep the cpu cool at the same time, I use a hair dryer on the "cool" setting to keep mine cool, and i make sure no moving air for the most part is going to any way help keep the gpu cool. use those rules of thumb, and get back to me and let me know how it goes, also, please use the guide i gave you step-by-step word for word, it has been reffered to as the "bible" from some people I have given it to. thanks to BurningAs for finding this guide, you can find the orignal post here. i am also a little intoxicated, please ingore the horrible spelling.
Thanks for your help, I did tighten the screws for the gpu with a screwdriver pretty tight so I think that may have been the problem although I haven't tried it yet, I will soon. Just want to check something. Here are the pictures of my arctic silver 5 that I put on the first time on my gpu Because it's a tedious task im wondering if its necessary to reapply the arctic silver 5? I can see it is a bit sloppy but I await your opinion. Just to remind you I've had my 360 work fine for a period of months with said applied arctic silver 5 so I'm not entirely sure that can be the problem.
Haha okay I'm quite embarrassed. I was looking at the pictures and realized what was wrong the whole time. I had the processor heatsink on backwards. (it was vertically set instead of horizontally set). I followed the guide, let it overheat and its working fine now
if thats the case read the post i sent you and you will get a good chuckle, as that was my first mistake, but it should also be noted that you are using too much thermal compound. too much or too little can both be bad
hey homesick, i gotta question i ordered a kit that has all the necessary screws, washers, etc. but it didnt come with the AS% syringe, rather just a (literally) 1 cm X 1 cm ziplock baggie with the compound in. It seems like there is the right amount in the baggie to cover the cpu and gpu chips adequatly, so there isnt enough for me to put too much on a chip, so my question is: do i need to have the syringe, or can i just squeeze it out of the baggie? thanks.
the guide you posted above is great! but is it ok if i dont put the steel washers on, just the 16 rubber ones? thanks
could i have some help please cuz im getting pretty dam agitated... I did the xclamp fix, repasted the heatsinks, etc., but now when i turn the 360 on waiting for the overheat, instead of turning on and having 3 red lights, i only get 2 and the fan turns off. im pretty confident that its not the screws cuz i adjusted and readjusted alot with the same result. I dont know what else it could be. ive been following the guide that homesick posted above. any help would be appreciated. thanks.
i posted in the other thread, and yes you should use the EXACT washers. its a guide for a reason. remember "size matters"
