Just put a xeno in a new pearl white cube. Soldering went well and getting the red followe by green leds. Boots full size cheap media fine, yet no luck with red datawrite discs? I had to play with the pot to get the full size to read, but why should one work and not the other?

My meter is broke (great timing) so I just adjusted the pot very slightly each time. Once the full size media booted I kept going anti clockwise, but then nothing would boot. Went back clockwise till the large media (Mario party 7) booted fully without read errors.

I just do not get why the full size is fine?

Ill get a meter this week, but I think im still going to have issues :0(

Even a slight turn will drop it 50+ ohms. Since you used cheap media and you did it without a meter, chances are that you lowered it too much and quite possibly damaged the diode. I'd leave it alone til you got a meter and bring it to about 200 ohms before you continue tweaking it.

Also, never use cheap media, especially with GC as it's very picky to begin with and forcing it to read cheap media is just asking for trouble. Just use RiDATA miniDVD-Rs and you should be fine.

I can see what you mean about using cheap media, but the problem is it is reading the cheap media full size fine, yet the branded 8cm datawrites it will not work with? Datawrites have never given me issues on other consoles and peps on here say they work fine.

I'll pick up a meter in the week. I cant see the fine adjustments doing much harm, and even if it did this cube is 2 weeks old so I can always get it refunded if it has.

Dropping the resistance too low can damage the laser diode, which can happen even with small movements on the screw. When you get the meter, you'll see just how much of a difference it actually makes.

Oh, and about the Datawrites. Depending on which one you got, you may have the one with the CMC dye, which would be why it doesn't work. Datawrites use dye from Ritek and CMC, so if you were lucky you'd have Ritek dye on them.

Use ImgBurn and check the media ID on the disc to see what dye you have, as you may have been ripped off. Discs with CMC dye are a waste of money, so I'd feel bad for you if that's what those are.

And for future reference on blank DVD-R, use this FAQ.

Also, like I said, GCs are picky when it comes to media. Mine wouldn't even work with full size Taiyo Yuden, and that's the best DVD-R media money can buy.

    cheers for the advice.

Knowing my luck I have the rubbish dye. I'll pick up a new multi meter tomorrow and I'll post my findings on both the media and my pot *gulp*
