I need to do a Motherboard, RAM + CPU upgrade. But, i need to know if this will trigger the XP Activation and could I just activate it again (although I have activated it twice all ready, once orignal install, once clean install forgetting to backup activation files) or do I have to make a phone call to Microsoft. If I did have to make a phone call to Microsoft would they just let me have another activation because it was a upgrade or would I have to buy another licence. OS is Windows XP Home OEM. Thanks, Dave
Of course not. And in the evntuality that it does give you any problems, call microsoft and they'll fix it.
Be aware though that you will have to reinstall the OS. XP will bluescreen if you swap out mobo's. The hardware hash changes too much and XP will puke. Backup ALL your important stuff before you do anything. If you havent reactivated in the past 6 months or so, the internet activation should work with no problems. ~Rich
Thanks for that. So as I understand I will need to do a clean Install of Windows XP and make a call to Microsoft (as last time I activated was under 6 months ago). Dave
Yop may have to call MS. Try the online one first. If it tells you to call, then call. My 6 month reference was just a guess. I know its around that time frame, but I dont know exactly. They will ask you if you have this installed on more than one machine, etc. Just tell them that you needed to reinstall because of malware/virus. Because its an OEM version, they may give you trouble because you are basically replacing the entire PC, so thats why I say to tell them that. ~Rich
