    hi,

I have a movie that is supposed to be xvid and ac3. It came with some programs as well: ac3 filter, ffdshow, vobsub, and the xvid codec. additionally there was a readme that said this:

1.recommend the files play with WMP9
    2.install ac3filter decoder Dolby Digital(AC3)
3.install DirectVobSub for plugin subtitles in WMP9

I followed the instructions and tried playing it with media player 9, but the movie would only show 1 picture with the name of the movie and then crash. I then installed ffdshow, after which the movie played, but the video had problems (sound was fine, so i assume the ac3 was not the problem).

My guess is that some of my codecs are ruining the movie, so here is a list of the video codecs i have:

    Cinepak Codec by Radius
    Indeo codec by Intel
    Indeo(R) video 5.10
    ir41_32.ax
    iyuv_32.dll
    Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec
    Microsoft RLE Codec
    Microsoft Video 1
Microsoft Windows Media Video 9 VCM
    msh261.drv
    msh263.drv
    msyuv.dll
    tsbyuv.dll
    XviD MPEG-4 Video Codec

Also, I checked the movie with GSpot just in case. The 4CC was XVID; 4 codecs were said to be capable of processing the format - XviD Codec, XviD decoder, ffdshow decoder, and InterVideo decoder

    Video Path: (S) --> AVI Splitter --> ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder --> (R)

    thx for your time

    yes!!!!!

turns out, the ffdshow that came w/ the movie was outdated.... i uninstalled it and installed the one on your site (much newer version)

i just need to get the subtitles to work, but that shouldnt be too hard...

ok everything works now. out of curiosity, are any of my video codecs useless and/or able to interfere with each other? I really do not know much about them...
