[bold]BioWare proudly proclaims that its upcoming Xbox 360 game Mass Effect will, in fact, fit on one disc. But just barely.[/bold]

But they said Blu-Ray was forced on us and was not needed...lol Are we running out of space already Microsoft just a year into your console. So we can say that multi Disc are going to be your standard down the road.

I have always looked at it this way.

PS1 came out which was CD based for "Next Generation"
PS2 came out which was DVD based for "Next Generation"
PS3 came out which is BD based for "Next Generation"

Now the PS2, PS3, Xbox and Xbox360 all offer or offered Hard Drive capabilities but another "Next Gen" option is download-able content. WHICH is really only available on the 360 and PS3. Now the truth is the 360 has a better online service RIGHT NOW but the PS3 has just come out and already they are offering really great demo's, some cool games (like Flow, Blast Factor etc.) and acceptable online multi play.

People always talk that Sony has dropped the ball with their online service when they couldn't be more wrong. For a beginning venture I think they have a very strong start. I personally can't wait for GTHD to be released (not the demo and not GT5), what is it like next month or so?

But back to my original point, if "Next Gen" uses "Current Gen" tech (nothing really different from it's prior console) is it truly "Next Gen"....in my opinion, nope. I didn't have 1 problem with spending the initial investment for my PS3 because of that, I want what is the best tech available RIGHT NOW, not a rushed system that *may* lose it's steam in say 2 more years.

I see so much potential in the PS3's graphics capability it's amazing and storage WILL NOT hamper them. Motorstorm will be an excellent example of this and the possibilities of what the next rendition of such a game or what others could be is phenomenal to me.

But I stress THIS IS MY OPINION although everything depends on the GAME DEV's and if they are WILLING to put the time and true effort to make something unbelievable. Not some half assed, bad AI, "shiny" but not graphically beautiful, boring title.

Now, I have to add that although I might seem pro PS3 and not so pro 360 that is wrong; as all they would have to do is implement the use of multiple discs for future titles. And though annoying it may be to swap discs, it's not that big of a deal.

    Nicely put Oner.

By the way if we mention Motorstorm I read its review on IGN last night.
Must say I was a bit dissapointed, but not surprised:
It got 9.0 on Graphics and Sound
While on Gameplay and Lasting Appeal it got a quite average score..
Also Online play seems not to be the best either :(

The 360 has been out for well over a year, and DVD-9's are still sufficient. One of the biggest concerns was fitting a huge RPG on a single disk. Oblivion proved it was possible, and now Mass Effect. The former an award winning game, and the latter with equal expectations. And while I can't tell you if the 360 will eventually tank or not, I do think that there are a number of solid games, mass effect included, that have yet to be released. I think that, for at least another year, the 360 will continue to have it's steam.

    Agreed.
Heck, one of the better Final Fantasy's was on 4 disks.

and Blue Dragon proved that DVD-9s aren't that great.

    Well played, sir.

Although the last 2 generations also saw multiple disk games, too. So a theory that there will never be enough room, but developers will make do with whatever is available might be appropriate?

The point is there is nothing about 360 that give you a Nex-gen feel. They use old tech but charge you Nex-gen price. If there games are on the same DVD-9 disc why are they charging you 60 bucks.

This is the reason PS3 will be a better system in the long run compared to 360

Yes, but last generation saw DVDs having two discs, so I don't see why people think that DVDs are going to be enough in the long run. I like to think of it this way, we could still be using CDs to play video games, we'd just have to switch out 12 discs during a game, so why don't we? it'd be even cheaper than DVD or Blu-ray. I think its because if you have a better format, you should use it, just because disc swapping isn't that bad, doesn't mean it couldn't be a problem(see my CD example). I just don't see how people can say Blu-ray isn't needed, now it may not be needed right now, but that does not mean it won't become needed in the long run.

Well BobbyBlu as usual I DO agree with you.
But I wouldn't say that Xbox 360 doesn't give you a next gen feel..

Because the first time I saw the Xbox 360 in action I was a bit surprised for its good graphics.

I think your statement fits well more with the Wii than the 360 ...

Haha. As I'm sure you can just feel the blu-ray-ness of the game while in the middle of playing it.

This is something I'd like to look into further. I'm assuming the majority of the cost is just because development costs are higher, larger teams are required for nex-gen games. But I am curious to what the costs are for 360 vs ps3. If you happen to run across anything, please post it. Maybe Devs are being a little more greedy with 360 titles. (And Wii titles, as kahn pointed out)

Ah. The Cell, and another article all about it's potential. I don't know what to say, other than I agree that it is a slick processor. But do you know what superb systems had inferior processors? The previous two (very successful) playstations. Which is why I personally don't find it all to important.
However, I do find it peculiar that in that article, "procedural systhesis" is mentioned to help unleash some of the cell power. As it were, "procedural synthesis" also works on the 360, and it's also one of the handy tools developers use to keep 360 games on one disk. Nifty, eh?

    http://gamesfirst.com/displayImage.... DVDs Are Big Enough | | XB360,&imageID=3105

Here is a chart of the average size of xbox games, over the period of the console's life. The 360's launch titles averaged about half of a dvd9. If we take the same growth rate, than the size should be sufficient enough for the majority of 360 titles.

That's a good point except that, in the ps3's case, blu-ray added a substantial cost to the system.
On the flipside, it might also not be needed. My take, as I mentioned earlier, is that Devs will use whatever they can to make what they want to work will work. Be it more space, or better compression tools. I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple ps3 games be multidisk in the future.

But I see how it might look that someone would be arguing for less space. Like I said, it's a double edged sword, as the blu-ray drive resulted in a more expensive playstation unit. Be that as it may, I feel that the strength ps3 has with blu-ray is movie playback - Not a game medium.
I don't care if a game comes on a cartrige, cd, dvd, or can be downloaded. If it's good, it's good. If it's bad, it will end up as garbage anyways. :)

People say its substantial, but for what you get it is not. 600 bucks, and things like GPS devices are even more expensive, hell the IPhone is 600 bucks, but i dont see people bitching about that price, only when its a Sony product.

Also, I really believe that Sony's newest announcements are going to make them THE definitive best again, they alreadu have the games coming out(whatever you say cant counteract the fact they have amazing games coming like MGS4/Lair/etc.) Point is, DVD Upscaling, most likely rumble back, playstation home, etc. Sony is just as good as they used to be, maybe better. The only negative for the system now is the price, and like i stated above, it isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Put forth a little effort and 600 bucks isn't that hard to come by in a couple of months, hell im a college student and yet ive found time to save up 3k. Anywho, I can't wait till i get a real job so I can affford an HD-TV, for that is the only real reason I have not jumped onto the newer consoles yet.

Thats a bet im willing to take not in the PS3 life time.

No its the fact that i know that i paid for new tech that has alot more to offer in the future than a company telling me there system is Nex-gen but nothing more than a DVD player under a new hood.

For years gamer has alway been upset that games don't play in real time now with Blu-Ray PS3 can offer gamer this.
