Please can you help. Although a new member have looked at this site and gained lots of usefull information from this site. Have a reasonable understanding but i am having big time problems with backing up Madasgascar. Tried shrink, no good, got to 36% then stopped, tried again , same. Looked on the site, downloaded DVDfab. Dvd fab wrote files to hard drive ok. Opened shrink and * invalid access to memory location* keeps appearing. Have downloaded shrink again and also downloaded the latest update for my nero.Still no good. Is there a setting i need to adjust and can someone please explain to me about reauthoring and what this actually does. Ps also had to play with split hard drive to increase the drive that i am usuing. Anyhelp would be appreciated. Thanks ajc123

 

Try running anydvd in the background then use dvd shrink,
Select re-author mode and select the main movie.
Then let dvd shrink do the rest.
DVD 43 may work in place of anydvd,
but I highly recommend anydvd instead.

This method doesnt require you to copy files to your harddrive,
And dvd shrink will compress and burn the movie 'on the fly'.

Re-author mode allows you to select only the video files you want,
And by doing so will require less compression for each movie.
The downside is the dvd menus will not work properly in re-author mode,
But its a small price to pay for a 1:1 backup on 4.7gb media.

I have to butt in on this topic as well. Thanks for the great guides on dvd decrypter and shrink. I have been using dvd shrink plus burning with Nero but will have to try your method now. I guess my question is can I burn a second copy of the same dvd now that it is in the folder already shrunk and encoded?

The answer is yes, as long as the files remain on your hard drive you can burn them to DVD as many times as you like using the nero DVD-Video application, just copy/past the files you ripped to your HDD into the VIDEO_TS folder provided by the application then burn to DVD. I personally remove the files from my HDD after I've burned them DVD , then I simply use nero or roxio to do a disk copy.

 

John.Thanks for the help. I am a little confused but that is normal for me. I have been burning using shrink and a previous copy (oem) of nero. I was able to go to 'photo and video and then burn dvd files and then add to the video_ts folder that appeared. I got a new computer yesterday and it had an updated oem of nero 2,1,2,21 and when i go to 'photo video' it now has a lot of options instead of just one previously and there is no burn dvd files. I don't know what to choose or do next to find a video_ts folder and then find the files to copy to it. I have not used dvd decryper yet but would that be easier. I am not sure what an .iso is and don't know whether i should be using that instead of getting .vob, .ifo etc files when i just use shrink and then backup. Any advice for an old fool would be helpful.

Hey doug,
Since you just got a new computer, the first thing you should do is make sure the DVD burner's firmware is upto date, if not I strongly recommend that you do. Upgrades provide add media support, this will help insure that the recorder will recognize what ever media you're using.

You should also update the oem version of nero(somewhat limited), the latest version is 6.6.0.18, download and install atleast package 1 and 2.

Once you install nero, you should have a nero smart start icon on your desktop, double click on it to start, then click on "Nero Burning Rom" under the application menu on the left. I've provided a link that will help guide you to burning those video files you ripped unsing dvdshrink.

DVDshrink is easier to use than DVDdecrypter, DVDdecrypter is a very good ripper and ISO image burner. The one to choose is upto you, but depending on file size (greater than 4.7 gb) and copy protection placed on the DVD, you may need to use a combination of both and also may need to use them with additional software such as dvd43(free) or anydvd (21 day free trial) to crack the encryption and get your backup. You can find guides to using both shrink and decrypter here at AD.

An ISO image is just a different file format for the video files (.vob, .ifo, .bup), it's viewed as a single icon with a .iso extension. The image is burned to DVD just as you did the files in the video_ts folder, only you're burning one file. Both dvdshrink and dvddecrypter can be used to create an iso image. DVDdecrypter will create an image of the files, but it will not shrink the files to fit on a single layer DVD if the movie is too large. DVDshrink will rip the files, shrink them to fit on a dvd-5, then create the image for burning. You can burn the image using dvddecrypter in iso write mode, use nero, use roxio, or use imgburn. What you choose to rip the files with, in what format, or how you burn them to DVD is up to you.

Hi all,

What i can't understand is that i am trying your suggestions and guides and i am still getting.
invalid access to memory and Programming error exception occured.
Dvdfab is putting it on my hard drive,then when i reauthor in shrink and drag the file into the left hand side, it starys to analise for 1 or 2 seconds then the error report comes up.

Do you have AnyDVD or DVD43 and then rip directly with DVDShrink? See if that would work for you.

First get VobBlanker (free) at:

Follow along and succeed in 5 easy steps:

1) Use dvddecrypter in file mode or dvdfab decrypter to rip the dvd files (whole movie)to your hard drive, once complete you should have all the files stored in a VIDEO_TS folder. Close DVDdecrypter or dvdfab.

2) Create a new folder on your desktop and name it "RIPPED", this folder will contain the processed files by VobBlanker.

3) Run VobBlanker. For input folder selection, browse to the VIDEO_TS folder containing the files ripped by DVDdecrypter, in the folder highlight the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and press ok. For output folder selection, browse to the "RIPPED" folder you created and press ok.

4) This is the important part...In the Title Set section (upper portion) of VobBlanker find and highlight the VTS_08*.VOB file, this will cause all the associated PGCs in the selected title set to be displayed (lower section). Under PGC# you should see entry 01 thru 05, entry 01 is the valid entry, the others are the ones causing the problem and need to be blanked. Highlight entry 02 and then press the blank button on the right, do the same for entry 03, 04, and 05. Now all you have to do is press PROCESS!! and wait until VobBlanker is done. The newly created processed files should now be stored in the RIPPED folder. Close vobBlanker

5) Re-name the "RIPPED" folder you created to VIDEO_TS. Open DVDshrink and choose open files, browse to the VIDEO_TS folder containing the newly processed files by vobBlanker, highlight the folder and press ok. All should be ok now, use dvdshrink as you normally would.

note: you can also use vobblanker first(with dvd43 or anydvd not both, running in the backround) to process the files directly from the dvd, then use dvdfab on those files, open the new files processed by dvdfab with shrink to get the file size down to under 4.7 gb and remove any extra stuff you don't want, then burn the output to dvd @4x.

 

still no joy. Followed th instructions to the letter (twice). Goy as far as Srink both times and error message appears,almost straight away. * invalid access to memory *. Any ideas

Is it possible that you have a corrupt shrink file? Uninstall it and reinstall with a clean download of shrink: http://mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

This may help.

What kind of pc stats do you have, such as Ram, Processor Speed, Drives etc.

Do you still have the origonal DVD you are trying to back up?

Iam using a sony vaio laptop with 60GB hard drive, plus 80GB external hard drive. Memory did get low on a previous attempt as my drives are split. Had a read followed by a play and now have plenty of storage.I have a 1GB ram with an intell(R)M Pentium 1.70 GH and using XP Pro version 2002 with service pack . The disc drive is pioneer DVD-Rw DVR-K14. Have had no problems in the past, but have not done any discs for a while.
On writting down your name i noticed that maybee i should have 22rugersemi-auto.

You may want to check the firmware version of the DVD writer drive. I looked it up and it should be 1.10 and is available here:

You can check it by opening DVDdecrypter and select Mode Write ISO.

Your drive and firmware version will show up in the upper right hand pane of DVDdecrypter - See below



After checking that, you may want to re-rip the origonal and see if that helps.

Updated firmware to 1.10 and tried to shrink the disc. Got to 36% again and error code *Data error (cyclic redundany check). Did not try it in dvdfab as it is saying disk is not encryted, but is 7.4 GB
