Man...you gotta stop thinking that way. There are A LOT A LOT of VERY good freewares out there. Infact, sometimes a freeware is better than a paid for version of a utility, O.S., etc. Businesses become corrupted...e.g. GREEDY! It is human nature though. So I won't bash big dog business man too hard LOL!
Laptops will always be worse than desktops in terms of the CPU and GPU - good CPUs and GPUs take up far too much space with their cooling units to be viable on a laptop - low heat output generally means low performance. Even £2000 laptops probably can't beat my desktop in games RAM in laptops, however, is nearly as good as the desktop equivalent, same with hard-drives. In a laptop the biggest let down will always be the graphics card.
Re Free software ~ there is indeed no reason to feel that free software is inferior to paid software, just look at Imgburn, DVD Shrink, DVD Rebuilder, DVDFab etc etc. I purchased DVD Rebuilder and DVDFab purely to show my thanks to the authors, was perfectly happy using the freebie versions. A couple bits of news/info ~ Microsoft to Test Windows 7 Updating Functionality Windows 7 (build 7000) to the Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100)
Microsoft: Windows 7 release in August '09 ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/768483/4667880
Quick note the software to remove Beta time limit/Send feedback button/Watermark has been rumbled. Every so often you are informed your windows isn't genuine and you can click to learn more.. So I've undone it still no watermark or feedback though
I like this screensaver. The first time I saw it, was on display in either costco, bestbuy, circuit city, etc. Here is a thought to make it a little better. Because currently they simply look like balls on a pool table. If they were to allow their light source to move slowly, it might appear like the rising/setting sun Perhaps even brief moments of glare, or simply more settings for the screensaver.
Windows 7 suggests that Microsoft is really going to have to make up its mind about whether it can do online and if so how. So far, Google has made nearly all the running. If Microsoft can mount a credible challenge and platform, then fair enough. But if not, then maybe they should retreat to their core, which is Office and operating systems, dump the Windows Live stuff and reinstate a decent email client. Of course this would be seen as a significant retreat for them, but the present situation - there is no email client installed with Windows - is simply pants.
Being lazy and pasting my scores from another site ~ For a laugh i installed W7 RC1 on my AMD Athlon 2800XP machine - due to being unable to find Nvidia drivers (XP nor Vista) that would install, and as this was just a quick test. This is just the base W7 setup, no programs installed, no point, only 1GB Ram and pants graphics. So, before installing reinstalling Ubuntu 9.04 (though first am Trying Puppy Linux 4.20 as Puppy runs real nice on an old P4 laptop and my HP AMD Turion laptop) we have ~ ~ Athlon 2800XP 2.08GHz, GeForce2 MX400 (running as generic pants graphics due to no drivers), 1GB PC2700 (166MHz) Ram, Windows 7 RC1 x86.
ROFL no words the picture says it all.... My desktops looking rather slobby ATM. The picture is of the fire that we burnt our high school books on
Was shown this on another site today, a nice simple way to differentiate between the different versions of Windows 7 ~ http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compare-editions Looks like it's either Premium for me, unless i decide i want Windows XP Mode in which case it'd be Professional. But don't want the other so called features over and above Professional ie don't want Domain join (it just sounds feeble and stupid, i'll continue to manually tweak my own settings thanks 'Nanny Microsoft'), Auto backup (same comment), Bitlocker (not interested in the least) or a choice of 35 languages (i only do English and Geek)
I think I'll buy Pro on XP it was: Home (Had media stuff and so on but missed some advanced networking business stuff.) Professional (Had business stuff. Missed some media stuff from Home. Everyone bought it as it was the most expensive and thus 'the best') Media Centre (Home edition with media centre added to extended life of XP) On Vista it is: Home Basic (Cheap as is possible misses pretty much everything only exists so they can say From £...) Home premium (Missing business features but with big old media system and so on) Business (Has business stuff. Misses some media stuff from Home premium.) Ultimate (Done to appeal to the people who decided pro was 'the best' and get there pennies. Has everything.) on 7 it will be: Home premium (Cheapest has all the stuff people actually use) Proffessional (Adds more business based stuff) Ultimate (adds very little that actually does anything. Will appeal to people who bought Ultimate last time) So it looks like for its simple versions 7 wins again!
Home Premium Upgrade - $49 - £49 Professional Upgrade - $99 - £99 For that reason alone (although still reasonably cheap), i'll be downloading instead of paying. Don't **** with me Microsoft -.-
