I just got a Mac Mini and I have a few TV shows in AVI format I want to burn to DVD to watch on my DVD player. Will iDVD or iMovie do this for me?
Nope. You need to convert to mpeg2 somehow. Either by going to QT first or if you can use FFmpegx or some other app to do it. Then when you have mpeg2 files you can use idvd, dvdstudio pro or toast to make your dvd. You know now that I think about it, toast may convert it for you and burn it too.
I'm in the same boat, and I'm looking for a paddle. In trying to convert .avi to DVD format for standalone DVD player using ffmpegx and either popcorn or toast. I've tried converting several ways using ffmpegx to DVD mpeg2, but to no avail. If it's telling, I get a black screen using 'preview' in ffmpegx. Shouldn't it show a clip? From what I've read, selecting 'quicktime' for decoding is best option, but I'm not getting a readable file. I have, what appear to be, proper binaries installed. Should I try Mplayer or ffmpeg (above left unchecked)? I downloaded divx (sp) and it appeared to be self - installing, but I'm not quite sure. If I've got that in the correct spot. I thought this was needed for avi to DVD. Both toast and popcorn don't recognize TS folder after encoding. Any checkboxes I'm missing. Are all presets for DVD Mpeg2 OK for what I'm doing? Thanks for the link. Tried using ffmpeg codec - still no go. Popcorn doesn't see file. I'll re-read tips again and give it a whirl. Jesse Garron
No Joy. This is frustrating. I'm running FFMpeg, but it outputs an mpv file along with wav and ac3. No TS files, although that is checked in post processing. Is there a button i should have pressed? (Using avi to DVD FFMpeg preset)
Yes,i have the same problem. When i export an avi to DVD (TS folder) with ffmpegx i get 2 files, the audio and video. The strange thing is that it says after a 20% of compressing that the file is completed. When i open the video file no program can read it.
I'm new to this too, and would like to burn my AVI's to DVD with my Mac G5. I heard you can't use IDVD so I don't know what to do first since all of the DVDs I have made have been with that program.
Man these ads are lame. Toast can convert most avi's to dvd or vcd. It takes a llllloooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggg tiiiiiimmmmmeeeeee.

It is hit and miss with the codecs, toast and quicktime. The only way to find out is if you try it. Load the avi's into toast under the video tab. It is a start it at night and HOPE it is done in the morning and didn't crash. That is with a fast machine too!
Hi actually I have the same exact question I have AVI and MPG files. So how do I burn those files to a DVD or CD. I tryed it with toast on the Video tab, it took for ever and then at about 3 quaters it didn't move anymore...
