I tried ripping a British copy of a movie (3.85 GB) that I purchased with MTR. Since it was less than the 4.3 gigs, I by-passed dvd2onex and burned with Toast. I came out with a black and white copy. Then I tried taking it through both MTR, dvd2onex then burning, and I still came out with a black and white copy rather than color. When I test the file on my computer, it plays in color; however, as soon as I put it into a DVD player, it shows black and white. Anybody have any clues?
Hey mima, First, Welcome to AfterDawn! Second, yup...I got your answer. I actually had the SAME problem the other day. I was trying to back up HellBoy and ran into black and white copy as well, UNTIL I found out why. Depending on what method you use, you will need to know this. http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/pal.cfm http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/ntsc.cfm http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/secam.cfm Now, I live in the states, so I had to convert my movies over to NTSC, and when they came out and burned to dvd, the color was right there and everything was good. But when you are using the dvd2onex, see if there is an option for that and set it for the country (region) your dvd is in. Also, I have a pc and not a Mac, but don't know or think that makes much of a difference to be honest. Hope this helps!
I couldn't find any options on dvd2onex for changing regions. So I ripped my original again with MTV after setting that to Region 1 rather than Region 0. Once again, I came out with a black and white copy when played on regular DVD players. When I put that same copy in my computer, it plays in color. How did you convert your movies to NTSC? Am I missing a step? Thank you for taking the time to answer...I appreciate it.
The movie is not in B&W. You are seeing it in B&W when you watch it on your NTSC TV because neither your TV nor your DVD Player can handle the colour correction needed to be displayed in colour. Computers play both formats without problems and that is why it plays fine (with colour) on it. DVD regions and PAL/NTSC/SECAM formats are totally different things. The former was designed to prevent you from playing a DVD from a different region regardless of its format (so you could not import your DVDs from parts of the world where DVDs are cheaper). Changing the region will not help with your problem. So you have three options: 1- Buy DVD Player that can handle both formats. 2- Convert the movie to NTSC. To get PAL to NTSC or vice-versa the easiest way is using DVD Converter which is bundled with the MPEG2Works 3.5 suite ($10) (http://www.mpeg2works.com/). Note that you will need the MPEG2 component for QuickTime ($25 available from Apple) and you have to rip the DVD as just one big .VOB file (http://www.mpeg2works.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=537) so you will lose all the menus. 3- Watch it on your computer.
