Yesterday I purchased a copy of MPEG3 Works 3.5.4 for $10. I have found the customer support to be very poor, they won't let me onto the forum and they won't answer my email requests for help.

The Task that I am trying to perform:
I am trying to convert a PAL DVD tyo NTSC Format

    My System configuration:
I have a power Mac G5 running Tiger 10.4.1, I'm logged in as Admin. I have Quicktime 7 Pro, Popcorn and Toast Titanium 6 at my disposal.

    The proceadure that I tried:
    1) I have ripped the DVD using MTR and now have a folder that contains my TS_Video which in turn has all the *.VOB files etc

    2) In MPEG2 3.5.4 under tools tools I used demux VOB/VRO's & AC and pointed the output to a new folder.

    3) this worked OK and in the new folder i now have video_ts.ac and Video_ts.m2v and lots of vts_xx.m2v files

    4) Under DVD/SVCD tab I clicked the NTSC button and pointed the output to yet another new folder. I checked the watch in terminal button.

    5) Executed the script, 2 terminals popped up but in a fraction of a second the terminals said logout
    [process complete]

with no output in my new folder.

    6) I then tried playing and tried the custom tab, I set the bit rate to 1150, audio to 44100, width to 352 & height to 240 45:3 MPEG2 NTSC, with the watch in terminal checked.

    7) the same thing happened.
    logout
    [process complete]

What am I doing wrong.. I am logged in to my Mac as admin.

Could someone please give me a step by step procedure for doing this conversion from PAL to NTSC?

    Thanks in Advance.

    Steve.

Serbian got back to me with my request for help. My apologies to Serbian! here's the answers that he gave me for using MPEG2 Works:

Ripping into a SINGLE VOB using Mac The Ripper:

Use MacTheRipper in TITLE/CHAPTER mode to extract the title you want (the one with MF in its name is usually the main feature).

You will get one big VOB file...Now try to open that .VOB in QuickTime...If QT opens it then Your MPEG2 component is working, if not You have to re-install working MPEG2 component for QuickTime which You can purchase on Apple site...That component is essential for MPEG2 Works and DVD Converter apps to work with MPEG2 files...

Now...If You hear audio in QuickTime that means that Your VOB has .mp2 audio track and therefore convert it with the preset button of Your choice under "VOBs with MP2 audio" section in DVD Converter...Make sure to check "Watch in Terminal" button before starting the conversion...If any error occurs, I can see from the Terminal output what is wrong...

If You cannot hear audio in QuickTime during playing Your VOB that means You have AC3 audio track and therefore convert it under "VOBs with AC3 audio" section in DVD Converter...

There is one more way to check what type of audio is in Your VOB...Launch MPEG2 Works, navigate to "Tools" section and check Your VOB with "MPEG Info" button....If it says for audio something like this:

    Audio : Mpeg 1 layer 3
    80 kbps 32000 Hz
    Mono, No emphasis

then You have AC3 audio...If it says something like this:

    Audio : Mpeg 1 layer 2
    192 kbps 48000 Hz
    Stereo, Emphasis: 50/15 microsecs

    then You have MP2 audio...

PAL to NTSC Conversion using the DVD Converter Tool (Bundled)

First rip your DVD with MacTheRipper in one VOB file as described on MPEG2 Works forum under Tutorials section /or just a scene you want, not the whole main title - it is important that you rip in one VOB/...Do not use ripping into streams, just follow the instructions under Tutorials section (above)

Then launch MPEG2 Works 4 (DVD Converter tool bundled with MPEG2 Works) and navigate to VOB Converter /command+v/ or launch it from "Window" menu...Set the desired bitrate contrats value /100 is normal setting for contrast/...Choose appropriate conversion button based on the audio format /AC3 or MP2/ and aspect ratio /4:3 or 16:9/ of your input VOB ...Then choose your VOB as input file and choose destination folder when application asks...

VOB Converter will start to work...You should be patient 'cause conversion from one TV system to another is slow process...

At the end of the conversion you should get .m2v /video track/, .mp2 or .ac3 /audio track/ and .mpg /multiplexed MPEG2 movie/ files...If you dont get .mpg file for some reason then just multiplex .m2v and .mp2 or .AC3 under Advanced DVD Authoring section /command+d/ using the top table...Then just drop produced .mpg onto bottom table for DVD VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder creation /authoring/...

Then burn authored DVD with Toast or from Finder...You can read more about options under Advanced DVD Authoring section by clicking the little "?" button in bottom left corner of that section...Same help button you can find on VOB Converter window...
