Hi System: asus P5GDI M/B, P4 processor, 1GB RAM 200GB SATA, 80GB SATA LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1673S Windows XP Pro SP2, NERO 6,3,1,26 My problem is that it takes 45 minutes to burn a single layer DVD. And that's with me not using any other apps (or even using the PC) at the same time. In fact I can't run any sound apps like Real Player/WM, for internet radio or play music, as the sound just goes ape, slow, stop indefinite reverb loop, etc. Any suggestions why this is taking so long? I hear from mates that 12 minutes is more like it on any reasonably specced system. I have also noticed that the DVD burner has "DMA" switched off - but I can't find where to switch DMA on to see if this makes a difference.
Hmm, dma might actually be the root of your problem. To set dma on, try the following which I have copied from another guy: Setting DMA: "Follow These Steps in WindowsXP 1) Right click the My Computer icon on the desktop and click Properties. 2) Select the Hardware page and click the Device Manager button. 3) Locate the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels, and double click on the one your hard-drive is connected to (usually the Primary IDE Channel). 4) Open the Advanced Settings page on the IDE Channel Properties window that appears. 5) Click the Transfer Mode dropdown box and select "DMA if available". 6) Click on the OK button to confirm the changes. 7) That's it, you've just enabled DMA. Depending on the number of devices you have on your system, it could be useful to do this on the Secondary IDE Controller as well, and to both devices on each of them. Alternatively, if you find your drive is locked in PIO mode it is simply a matter of uninstalling the appropriate controller in Device Manger by right clicking on it and selecting uninstall and then rebooting a couple of times and it will then have been reset to DMA mode. Most DVD drives are UDMA2 or similar" BTW, you may not want to go beyond 4x since many people have reported problems burning too fast. Good luck!
Thanks mate, I'll try that anyway... but would you believe, after putting up with this for months, posted the question and then had a thought. Why not go to the LITE-ON website. Checked their trouble shooter where they also mention DMA as a source of slow transfer, but I also took the opportunity to "Update" the firmware. Did it.. DVD now burns in 7 minutes!!

i dont think u have to install all of 'em but just the latest one. well at least thats the way it worked the last time i did it.
You know, I am not real sure as I do not have nero. Just hang on for a little bit and someone will give you good info. I would only be guessing. Patience my friend and welcome to AD. Lots of good people here.

Hi Scf_au Thanks for the caution tip. As it happens I've already gone and upgraded to latest Nero 6, but is Nero 7 a free upgrade then?
