Hey, I was not positive where to post this because it could have gone in several forums.

Anyways, lately I have had trouble copying DVD's. I use DVD Shrink and Nero to do it, but lately it has started burning but then would freeze or basically just stop half way through. I have reinstalled DVD Shrink and Nero thinking they were the problem but I tried again and it still did not work. Could it be the burner or just a problem with the programs and stuff? Any help would be appreciated because this problem is really getting annoying.

    Hello and welcome to Afterdawn.
First things first we don't copy anything here cause that is illegal.
We do backup DVD though, it just something to get in the habit of saying.
As for your problem, are you getting any error messages?
And if so can you post them here, along with your computer specs.
Like CPU, make of burner, RAM all those type of good things.

Also what kind of media are you using?
And what speed are you burning at?
Have you updated your burners firmware?

What decrypter are you using besides DVD Shrink?

Now this computer is really not too great at all, but I never had problems with the burner or programs before. I will find some specs.

    Medion Professional Computer Intel(R)
    Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1600 MHz
1.60 GHz, 256 MB of RAM

As you can see, not the greatest.

The make of the burner is ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16 I believe, not sure if that is enough info on it.

All I have been using is DVD Shrink and Nero Burning Rom and just the basic 4.7 GB DVD's or whatever. I usually set the burn speed to maximum.

I'm not sure what firmware is so any information on that would be appreciated.

first...... try updating your nero! it's an old version!
second..... try making sure your DMA is on!
third...... try not burning on the fly!

    What is DMA?

And what do you mean by burning on the fly?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure about everything.

Also, the file you're burning is too big. Try not to go over 4300Mb

Another 250Mb or RAM, minimum, would be VERY indicated.

    how to enable DMA

    http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues

i couldn't find it, what kind of media are you using. maximim speed burn is not so good.Try do go to x4, and use good media(Verbatim, TY, Maxell or Sony MIJ)
    I'm looking for firmware...

What kind of burner do you have? Is that an external one?

    Here you can9should) update Nero:

    ftp://ftp.us2.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

[bold]buring on the fly[/bold] is when you copy a disk directly form disk to disk..... the program should copy to Hard DRive first then burn from the hard drive..... this is to assure there are no mistakes before the burn! Reading errors can occur with burning on the fly and if that happens you waisted a disk...... like what you are doing now!

your files is too big to get on a DVD-5! Just like cyprusrom said. And we don't see what kind of media you are using! And what movie are you trying to back up? And also try to burn no higher than 4x.
Also you didn't mention how big your hard drive is!~

    MetHead87,

Recorder: ATAPI 2X16X4X16 DD DVD Version: G7C9 - I've done some searching and this appears to be an I/O Magic burner, which is actually a rebadged OEM BenQ 1620. I'd strongly recommend you upgrade the firmware. In fact I've found a method that will actually upgrade your burner to a DW1620 Pro.

Please bear in mind that crossflashing the drive will void it's warranty.
Go to the unofficial BenQ firmware (http://dvdpro.club.st/firmware/BENQ_FW.htm) page download WinDWFlash.exe (near the top of the page).
Do Not Download the B7V9 firmware package from this page, it will not work in your drive.

Instead you need to download the B7V9.cvt (http://codeguys.rpc1.org/benq/original/1620.b7v9.cvt.rar) which is the latest official firmware.
Then use the WinDWFlash.exe with the B7V9.cvt firmware to upgrade the burner.

NOTE: You must use the WinDWFlash.exe with the Bxxx.CVT firmware to perform the initial upgrade, DON'T use the Bxxx.exe files with WinDWFlash. After your drive is flashed with Bxxx firmware you can in the future flash to newer versions using the Bxxx.EXE updates.

You may need to download the software Winrar, possibly.

You should run Nero info tool, to find out what firmware version you have prior to doing any of the above. The version you have may determine the version that you need to download/install.

    HTH,

    Rich

Yes, you should be good to go with those instructions. You might want to do it in "SAFE MODE", so nothing is running, like your anti-virus, etc.

    Best of luck,

    Rich
