I'm working on a friends laptop beacause his kids (likely story) got this browser/ search engine toolbar called "Gopher Search" and its been a little tough to root out. I've run CCleaner Ad-Aware Spybot Ewido had to manually delete some regestry keys then run Hijack this, deleted anything that had to do with "gopher search" and here is the latest log. Ok, there is something that needs cleaning. You don't have a firewall or an antivirus on your computer. Download and install one firewall and one antivirus. These are good (free) firewalls: ZoneAlarm --> http://www.zonelabs.com Kerio--> http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm Outpost-> http://www.agnitum.com These are good (free) antiviruses: AVG Antivirus --> http://www.grisoft.com Avast --> http://www.avast.com Cleaning instructions: Run HijackThis and fix these entries (if found): (Do a system scan only, check entries, close all other windows, press Fix checked) R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/defaults/su/*http... Thank you for the quick response. I will take the steps given, I will post by this time tomorrow, for it is 4PM here and tonight my brother in-law is getting married and I've no time to complete these tasks. Thank you again.
I did the Zone Alarm firewall... set everything up fine. I did all that. Ok, and good that you posted everything (it was all needed). Your log looks clean =) But you should install a antivirus because those online scanners are not enough. You must have a realtime protection that stops the viruses before they can infect your computer. One beautiful day you might get an virusinfection that blocks your access to that onlinescanner. You are not going to stay clean without an antivirus software installed. So install an antivirus. Having any problems?
I don't seem to have any other issues. Thank you for your help, and I will setup the Antivirus before I give the laptop back with the clean seal of approval.
Update... My friend picked up his laptop and I showed him how to use the firewall and AV tools installed. Showed him how his machine ran (just internet surfing) and beside the home page not being hijacked anymore, he said things worked and clicked away as if it was new out of the box with a fresh Windows install. Thanks again.
