I realized that I don't actually get the speeds I select...

I have a NEC 3520a and a BenQ DW1650, and I can't get them to burn as fast as they are supposed to. If I select 8x on my NEC, it will actually cap out at 4x. If I select 16x on my BenQ, it will fluctuate between 2.4x-4x, but sometimes will climb to 10x where it will die, and resume from 1x. I've tried all kinds of software, Imgburn, Nero, CloneDVD, etc, but it also burns the same slow. I'm using good media as well(MCC-004), but I've tried some crappy media(RicohJPN, Ritek) with the same results. I've tried different write types(DAO, SAO, Packet) with the same results. All my hard drives are DMA enabled. I don't know what else to try... Is my computer too crappy to burn at anything higher than 4x? I don't think so, but it is pretty old. Perhaps, my PSU can't provide enough power causing the drive to "die?" Need more RAM? Faster CPU? My laptop is quite a bit better, but I would need to buy an enclosure....

Can you post one of your Nero logs? It will hold some clues as to what is going on with your system.

Ok, just burned something at 16x on MCC-004. You would expect 5-7 minute burn, nah I got a 16 minute one. What's this? It failed verification too! This drive has only given me grief. :(

just passing.....as i had just found a thread with new firmware for the DW1650 - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/338028#1983408

    anyways.... -

    - there's one big problem, DMA needs to be ON for ALL drives.

    - ouch, the other big problem - the details of the blanks discs aren't present ie the firmware doesn't recognise those discs; this is similar to what you should see -
    - ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date/is able to recognise the discs

    - here's what i think of Nero verification http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/319812#1860040 :)

    Hi Creaky,

I should have stated in my first post that I am using the BCHC firmware. As for DMA, I have set my IDE controllers to DMA, if available, but one on each controller says not applicable..

How do I get Nero to recognize my discs? I am on BCHC and using MCC-004.

If you need any pictures or anything, let me know.. I really want this to get fixed...

re the discs, that is extremely odd, i use MCC004 quite happily in my Benq, at 8x or the odd 16x.

as to the DMA, not sure how to get DMA on for the RAID controller or that other port that sounds like a RAID port..

    edit-

Well waddya know, i get almost the same errors in my logs for MCC004 on my BENQ DW1650. All my burns were fine as i've watched the resulting movies on those discs so i know they're fine. However i'm sending all my unopened MCC004 back to the supplier anyway (i had one burn blip on me so i'm sending them all back to replace with Verbatim Taiyo Yuden (cus i can lol), so i've done some test burns on other discs i have. What i'll do is do some test burnms and check my own Nero logfile..

    - same problem as you for [bold]ALL[/bold] my MCC004 burns (ie the 1liner without the disc info..

    - very similar problem to you, however all mine have actually worked, regardless of these errors in the logs.. -

    - burnt a 4x rewritable dvd for something i was doing, and it gave the correct detail for that disc

    - one of my olde worlde normal 8x Verbatim discs (that give me immense trouble on my LG 4163B/4167 drives). this was fine too

    - a sexy 8x Verbatim Taiyo Yuden, this was fine too

To summarise, it would appear that MCC004 aren't properly supported in the DW1650's firmware, from the Nero log snippets anyway. i'm gonna have to do some digging on the cdfreaks forums...

I wouldn't have noticed this without seeing your post as i check my burns via watching/recopying them, so would only have looked at my own Nero log if i'd have hit a problem...

    more to follow :).......

Interesting that they wouldn't support MCC-004's...

    hi

ata guess i would say check your ASPI layer is installed ok? and CD drives on a fasttrack dont go as they are mainly for hard drives

and you are burning to fast too with your problems

uninstall those ide drivers and get VIA 4in1 and install them

I just used a RICOHJPN R03 @ 4x and it still gave me the one liner. Do you have any of those to test?

    @Rotary

I installed that VIA 4in1 when I installed windows. What I don't get is this:
OtherPeripheral: Promise RAID Console 1.00 fasttx2k Port 2 ID 4 DMA: Off
DiskPeripheral: WDC WD800JD-22LSA0 06.0 viasraid Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off

But, if you looke at the VIA Raid Tool, it says that drive is in DMA mode...:

On the log you posted, your burning very close to the edge of the disc.

    <BENQ DVD DD DW1650 > start writing Lead-Out at LBA 2277696 (22C140h), lenght 0 blocks

The verification errors are occuring close to and within the lead-out area. Try not to burn so close to the edge.

    hi

doest that via raid tool show the cd drive aswell in there ???? plus you cant raid a cd drive / hard drive together, 2 HD only...

only this cd drive is seen in nero and maybe device manager? so can only help/test your BENQ DVD DD DW1650 and NOT! your nec.

yes this one is very interesting? can you check aspi layer is working ok either go to the ASPI folder maybe (adaptec) folder as mines here:

    C:\adaptec\aspi\aspichk.exe

or use nero info tool to check aspi

    Existing drivers:
    File 'Drivers\atapi.sys': Ver=5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158), size=95360 bytes, created 8/3/2004 10:59:44 PM (Adapter driver for rec)

    no aspi layer

i am thinking you may have a couple of issues here maybe?

    @Dolphin

Shrinking down my files a little bit actually fixed that particular problem! Still not getting good scans with MCC-004 though, 2500+ PIF which I know is because my drive can't burn fast enough for their liking.

    @Rotary

When I took those Screenshots/Nero Log, my NEC was disconnected. Here are updated versions:

Primary IDE, Device 1 is my 250GB Hard Drive
    [IMG]

Secondary IDE with both my drives connected
    [IMG]

Nero InfoTool says my ASPI is intalled an working properly.

Here is the configuration which might be of use..

(Oh, and I realize that my only internal IDE drive is listed as slave, I'll fix that later)

C:\Adaptec doesn't exist on my hard drive. Is it something you download?

Glad we got the verification error solved.

Don't know about the speed and disc things. Wonder if that is something to do with the new firmware? Or perhaps QSuite? Still, it is a problem. By any chance did you sent BenQ support an e-mail?

Yeah, that verification thing was annoying..

In regards to the speed thing, I had the same problem with BCFC, so I don't think it's exclusive to this firmware. I really should email them about it..

I ordered some 8x DVD-R Taiyo Yudens from supermediastore, so when they arrive I'll see if my problem is only with MCC-004. If you look at that BenQ Hall of Fame thread you'll notice that I get good scans with RICOHJPN R02 @ 4x. My whole problem with MCC-004 is that they don't burn good at less than 12x which this drive(or my computer) can't achieve.

    (nice same time post! :p)
