ok so i have been burning dvds of veronica Mars Season 1 on my brand new as in like within a month old computer and all of a sudden it wont recognize blank media. in fact the only thing it will recognize is my sisters Sims 2 disks. I have looked on other threads and i have tried a new package of disks and i have updated the firmware. i have also unistalled the drive and installed it again. This burning thing is very new to me and when i started it was so easy and straight forward. I have a HP Media Center PC m7250n with a HP dvd writer 840b. I use Sonic MyDVD Plus! software and have used Memorex Dvd-r and Memorex Dvd+rw disks. PLEASE HELP!!!!

try another software app first,as sometimes some software can go haywire, and may need a fresh install

load up dvd decrypter(if you have it)mode/iso/write, and pop a disk in,see if the information of the disk pops up
    also try the media identifier

ok so i have tried all those suggestions and nothing. Could it be the fact that when i go into my computer the burner is called DVD-RAM, it was never that before. i think anyway.

Try to get a better media other than memorex and see if the problem persists.Get a verbatim or a taiyo media, just to know whether the problem comes from the media or not, because these two are actually the best in medias. If they are recognised by your burner and burn fine, then it's just your memorex that's the source of all your problem.

Keep us informed about the situation.

I hate to say it but for 50-80 bucks a new burner might do the trick have you tried to burn data or mp3 ? Try Verb's cheap and they work.

    @Paige123........
can you be a little more explicit in what you did? If you changed your media what media are you using. You udated your drive's firmware.. what did you have and what did you go to? MyDVD Plus is an ok program but not the best. What program did you change to. If you can explain what you are doing maybe we can help you better.

your writer is: HP DVD Writer 840b (OEM LG 4166B)
RPC1 firmware - HJ86 Windows. HJ86 is the current firmware. If you have different

    this from the HP website:
    HP dvd840i (dvd840b) Firmware Update (hpdvd840b_HJ86.exe)
HP Customer Care HP dvd840i (dvd840b) Firmware Update (hpdvd840b_HJ86.exe) Printable version Step 1: Release Date: 2006-03-01 Version: 68JH Firmware update for the HP dvd840i DVD Writer (Q6773A) Enhancements ...

you can find out your firmware by using DVDDecrypter:

and if you don't have DVDDecrypter then download it here:

something all newbies should read..... will help you with many problems:

are you sure you updated to the correct firmware?
Firmware for your burner as that sets new write strategies for new media thats out..

Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. Every company has its own methods to allow you to do a firmware upgrade. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. To find you firmware go to your burner homepage and find the firmware for you make and model.

I wish you much luck and welcome to Afterdawn.

ok well to anser your questions i did switch from memorex to Verbatum disks and i have updated the firmware. I have tried burning with MyDVD and i have tried Nero and DVD Shrink. My burner will burn an audio cd through iTunes but that is about it...o and i also reads software disks. Thanks for the info about the firmware btw...wasnt sure what it actually was. The burner is still not working but it is, i found out, on warranty so my father is going to take it to Future shop to get fixed if within a week i havent figured out the problem. I have come across an idea going through some of the other threads, could all the software i have downloaded be interacting wrong with each other. I have though since deleted all of the programs and reloaded the MyDVD because my sister uses it to burn audio disks.
    thanks for everyones help!

i have also noticed that when people have shown dvd decrypter pictures theirs all have under the source line somthing like [2:1:0] is there a reason why mine says [0:0:0] and what are those numbers and what do they mean.

I'm not exactly sure what those #s are but my guess is that it has to do with the Primary drive and secondary dirve .... slave or master.... or something like that.... can't be sure on that.

The disc that came with the burner was just Nero 6 basic, the one was a 110d the new burner was a 111d ( Pioneer )switched burners and updated the firmware online. It did not have drivers or nothing like that I'm running windows xp pro I guess everyone was running at least XP, maybe not. That could cause some problems too.
