I'm really fustrated. I just bought a Sony DRX-820UL-T Dual / Double layer DVD burner. I'm trying to burn a quicktime movie made on a home video cam which is only 2.9GB (37 mins). I'm using a Memorex DVD+R DL which has 8.5GB of disk space. It seems like that should me more than enough space for a 2.9GB quicktime movie (made in IMovie on my MAC). I'm using Toast 6. What am I missing here? Are the Memorex disks bad or am I missing an important step? I'm a newbie to all this but it seems like I have the right hardware where not enough disk memory errors would not be an issue. Is there something I need to do to compress my quicktime movie further and how do I get the full 8.5GB of disk space that my burner should allow me? Thanks all help is much appreciated....
We might need some more info to be able to help you, as there are so many variables that could cause this error. Are you just trying to archive the quicktime movie onto a DVD or do you actually want it to be able to play from the DVD like a DVD movie? If the latter is the case, you may need to convert the quicktime file into a different format. In any case, if the movie is only 2.9GB, it should fit on a regular DVD in any case, so why are you using dual layer? How much free space do you have on your hard drive? You should always leave at least a couple of GB free for burning for when Toast fills its RAM cache. Make sure you have no other programs running in the background, and to be absolutely safe, turn of your connection to the net. Is your DVD burner internal or external? Make sure you are using the right type of media for the drive (stupid thing to say but it does happen - use DVD-R for -R recoders, and DVD+R for +R recorders. It can be very easy sometimes to pick up the wrong box) Which options in Toast have you selected to burn the DVD? I've never burnt a Dual layer disc, but I think you need at least Toast 6.06 to do it. The other thing you could look at is the media itself. I had a lot of problems with Memorex standard DVDs and now I use nothing but Verbatims. Try burning to a Verbatim dual layer disc and see if it helps.
thanks for the response... I'm actually trying to burn the quicktime movie to play from the DVD. I've been able to do it in the past with smaller files. It plays with no problem directly from the DVD. There must be a way to compress a quicktime movie to a smaller file. I agree I should not need the double layer burner for the smaller job of 2.9GB but I have many more files I want to add and burn but I was using the smaller job to test the burner since I just bought it. I do not have that much free space on my hard drive (less than 1GB). Based on your respone, that could very well be the problem. I will delete a bunch of stuff and create some space. I also ordered some Verbatim brand DVD's. I went to the Sony website and they said that the Verbatim's are certified to work with my DVD burner. I'm using the Toast 6.0 version and need to upgrade to a newer version. I downloaded Toast 7 but need to upgrade my OS to 10.3 to install and run it. I currently am running 10.2.8 I think that the RAM cache is what is causing my problem. I will try clearing some space tonight after work and see if that helps. Thanks again....
Ok, good luck. Write back and let us know how it goes. You can compress QT files with Sorensen Squeeze, Cleaner and I think also Handbrake. There are probably others too. Have a look on versiontracker.com
try this.. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/compressquicktimetompeg4.html and eventhough the file is that small, it still needs to re-encode it. doing this just makes the file much bigger. like already discussed, clear some stuff out. may be time to get an external hard drive. please post what happens.. would like to know.
