I was successfully in using the hack trick and everything seemed to be working well. I can't exactly remember when it occured but a noise started coming from the xbox. I loud ringing noise very high pitched. I can't for the life of me figure out what is. I know sometimes when I'm playing movies which I usually stream. I can hit pause and it will go away. I thought maybe that where I place it was making it overheat and so I moved it. Now it doesn't even want to work and it immediately makes the sound once I turn it on. What is the deal can anyone tell me what the problem is.
Its back working and its not making any noise of now(go figure) but as soon as it does I will record it.
Hard drives will make a squeeling noise if they get too hot, more than likely it was your hard drive. You want to make sure it's not getting to hot, monitor your temps in either avalaunch or xbmc to see how hot everything is getting. A easy cooling mod is to modify a 80mm fan to replace the stock fan (cut the bottom corners off). CPU temp should range from about 40º-65ºC (104º-149ºF) Motherboard temp should range from about 33º-49ºC (90º-120ºF) The last squeeling hard drive i've seen in an xbox was completely useless. I had to make a eeprom reader to get the eeprom and make another hard drive. Don't let this happen to you, back up your eeprom incase this hard drive is on it's way out. Also i have an external hard drive from back maybe 5 years ago and it was poorly designed, the hard drive would heat up, squeel and be useless until it cooled down. I could use it maybe 15-20 mins if it was idle, and maybe 10 mins or less if it was being written to or read. That hard drive works flawlessly today now that i modified the external case. With all this said, more airflow should help your situation.
I had a feeling that its the hard drive. I will check out the temps how exactly do I make the sound file available?
If your asking how to make the sound file, just take a video of it with the camera really close to the system, that'll capture the audio of it. I don't need any video and this is the easiest way to do it.
Here is a link to the audio file http://rapidshare.com/files/116153881/audio.wma.html I still have to check my tempature just been slow about it.
yup that's your hard drive, it's getting too hot or has gotten too hot and the tolerances inside have changed. If i were you i'd back up the xbox's eeprom so if it does go on you you're prepared.
