Hi all, new to this forum and possibly asking something that has been addressed before. If so I apologize and ask for kindness up front. I back up movies with DVD Shrink no problem, then burn to disc, apparently successfully, with Easy DVD Creator. Many of these movies will load to menu and start just fine then at some point will freeze frames, jerk forward, and even freeze completely. I have better success playing them back on my computer than on DVD machines, but the problem can occur even on computer playback. Very frustrating and defeats the whole purpose of making a backup copy if I can't play it. Any thoughts or links to threads already discussing this? Thanks in advance.
poor quality media and to high of a burn speed is most likely the problem. use Taiyo Yuden,Verbatim or Sony burning at 6x to 8x max on a clean machine with the most up to date firmware for you drive burner. more info here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/622748

A belated and very big thanks to all for responding. I have moved on considerably from when I asked the original question, and I am facing a new problem but no longer under the topic of DVD Shrink. I'll explain here and if anyone can answer, great, and/or if you can kindly direct me to where this would be better to post, just as great. After following the links in 7th's sig and much more reading, I migrated to DVDFab for ripping and ImgBurn for writing. Followed advice to use only Sony, Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden (I got Sony DVD+R 16x), updated firmware, burn at low speeds (tried 2.4x/4x/6x/8x), target 4300MB, don't multitask when burning (in fact I usually re-boot first to keep the RAM clean), etc. And when I am successful at burning a disc, it works fine in all players. Problem is, 90+% of attempts to write with ImgBurn result in an I/O error. This error occurs a few seconds after starting the burn -- if it is able to load the device buffer then it continues all the way to a successful burn. I could post a log if needed. Advice I got on the ImgBurn forum is to try Verbatims. I don't know if that is targeted advice or just stabbing in the dark. I just bought a bunch of Sonys and would prefer not to have to buy more discs as a trial-and-error approach to troubleshooting the problem. Aren't the Sony discs good enough? Is this a media problem, a drive problem, or a software problem? Would I have better success with different software for burning? Much gratitude in advance for any and all input.

Is this burner in a Laptop? Also when I looked it up It said Max write speed is 8x. May be if you Try using 8x Media And burn at 4x. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P127829/en/spec.htm
Yes, it is in a laptop, and indeed it does say max DVD+R write speed is 8x. I have been trying to write slower than that, but true using media rated higher. Perhaps that's the problem, thanks.
laptops aren't great for backing up DVDs see if you can find a firmware update for the drive/burner to support the 16x media
I've updated to the latest firmware. Would an external burner work better? Any budget-friendly ones you could recommend?
Hi all, here's an update: I decided to try the hardware approach and bought a LiteOn external DVD burner (only $50 w/free shipping from NewEgg). Since then been burning to those Sony discs no problems. So thanks all for the help. For anyone interested in Verbatim discs, I saw them (+ or -R, 16x) at OfficeMax on sale for $20 for 100, and they also send coupon cards to me in the mail, the most recent being $10 off a purchase of $30+, so you can basically get 200 Verbatim for 30 bucks or 15¢ apiece.
if you're backing up many DVDs a desktop is the best bet, glad the external drive worked. are the Verbatim MIT or MII ?
