    Looks interesting Misty.. Will give that a go tomorrow on an ex fista laptop.. after installing the ethernet driver from my stick of course ;)
    Trust me to find the catch22 with this program. No network drivers = no network connectivity = no use whatsoever.
    Will report back on whether it's any use or not.

    I'm pretty sure I tried this program a while back. It seems to me it's one of those "free" program downloads thats scans your PC, informs you what you need, and tells you to buy the "full" program to get it to actually work.
    No. you are not getting XP drivers from your motherboard disc. Do as cee43ja1 recommends and go to the manufacturer website. By the way, I did wind up buying one of those "driver update" programs.
    This one:

    Another scan and beg scam but Iwound up buying it anyway. Works good.

    Oddly.. if it just makes a proper list of what it detects it could be useful... especially when it's an xp install on a fista machine and the manufacturers don't seem to have the actual model listed for xp at all.

    I use linux and lspci then second guess by chipset and revision.. usually works a treat except with the 10 billion chipset/driver variants on the "ac97" theme.

    Back to topic .. psplova, if that disk looks good run it and see what it offers. It's probably the disk which came with your mobo. I can't guarantee it contains all the right drivers.. (asus k8n for example has the wrong sound driver on it) but it will be a start.

    I agree with varnull. Run it anyway, you have nothing to lose.

    I just had a notion. How were you planning on reinstalling XP? OEM rescue disc? Retail XP Home Edition Full Version? If you have either of those and can access a different computer you can download and burn a dban nuke disk to wipe your infected hardrive clean of everything. Then, if you do have a reinstallation disc at least you'll have a clean XP and XP drivers installed. Then you can work on device drivers from your PC manufacturer. Sometimes it works best to start over from square one if possible.

    Read carefully.

    That's great. Just a follow up to DriverMax. I did install it and it appear's to do what it say's and I saw no paid program. It import's all your current driver's or scan's your computer listing which one's need updating, downloading and installing each for you if you want. An update to my Nvidia display adapter did hose my display but so did an install of Vista once and an MS update for Nvidia for XP so that has nothing to do with this, an update from Nvidia would accomplish the same. Didn't check it out a long but seem's like a good program.

    Well drivermax was useless to me. No way to use it without a working connection.. because it insists you make an account otherwise you can't use it even in trial mode, and the (still) missing drivers are the wireless and ethernet ones :(

    Tested today... result.. failed miserably .. wasted my time.

    I purchased a 2nd hand laptop (HP4200) from my company with HD formatted.
    I loaded Win XP Pro using a friends disk. All loaded OK.
    However I cannot connect to the internet via broadband as the RJ45 port is inactive. No ethernet driver = no connectivity.
    When I go into control panel / system / hardware / device manager I see no drivers installed for following:
    * Ethernet controller
    * mass Storage
    * Multi Media Audio Centre
    * Network controller
    ... etc ..

    I tried to install drivers using Win XP Disk - but software not available on disk.

    Can anyone help?
    Where could I get required software.

    Many Thanks,
    Joe 90.
    Dublin.

    There are a few different drivers for wireless to choose from. Do you know which wireless card is in your laptop?

    For example....
    Wireless 1370
    Wireless 1470
    Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG
    etc.... (There are several more.)

    As for the errors you're getting, make sure that you go to www.dell.com/support. I've seen issues with their website before, so you may want to try a different browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc...).
