First off .rar means it has been compressed using winrar so you will need to unzip it first (google winrar and you can download free trial version). You then need to flash your box using Flash Assistant and connect your PC to the Dbox using a crossover ethernet cable or a standard ethernet cable hooked up through a router. There are many tutorials about and you will need to do a search for them

No it is not, what you want is to be able to flash your box with the latest firmware, and you have to learn sometime so go to here >>>>>>>>>>
diferrent box but you need all the same lead/s

And then go to Eamo's FTA Library (link at the bottom of post) you will find hepfiles and the firmware okay.

The file you downloaded is correct its just in a different format.
If you google 7zip, download that and install it, its free, then when you open up the rar file you can extract the .bin file from it.
Think of it as one of those plastic vacuum packed bags (rar file), there could be 1 2 3 4 or lots of things in the bag and when you open the bag (extract)you can get the thing you want (bin file), then when you get the .bin file all you have to do is put it into the firmware folder on the hard drive as you already did with the rar file and it will work, much easier than useing null modem cable.

It is a lot to easier to go into Eamo's FTA Library at the bottom of my post and download Winrar, that is also free, and when you have installed that on your PC. Then you can extract - unzip any zip or rar files you need to, as and when.
