DVD ripping and burning with MAC

I'm not only new to MAC, but new to DVD ripping, cloning, etc... I've downloaded extractor, OSex, and DVD backup 1.3. I think I have gotten the video off the DVD and onto the harddrive (maybe!), but how do I get it to burn to a DVD. I tried it using DVD backup and I got a DVD that won't play. I'm trying to copy my kids movies/cartoons so we can take them on the road. Any thoughts on the easiest way to do this? I'd like to burn to another DVD-R and not compress to a CD-RW.

use dvd backup to rip the dvd, then use dvd2onex to
shrink it, then use dvd studio pro 2 or toast 6.0 to burn
    it.
