no this not a silly question it's a common issue people have, since your tv is 1080i (right?) your dvd will play at 1080i. there is no such thing as a 1080i/p dvd. As long as your dvd player has the capability's to project in 1080i your DVD will play in 1080i.

Ok, first your player outputs at 1080i to your set. If you have a LCD/DLP or plasma, the TV will deinterlace the signal to 1080p. All fixed panel TVs are progressive scanning. If you are using an old crt tv, you will see the 1080i signal.

And when you say your TV is 1080i max, is it 1080i input max? What is the native resolution of your TV?
