QUICK LINKS Understanding New Pattern Format | Printer Friendly Page

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Malware type: Backdoor

    Aliases: BackDoor-CZP, Infostealer, Win32/Cakl.A!DLL!Trojan, Win32/ProcHide.C

    In the wild: Yes

    Destructive: No

    Language: English

Platform: Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Server 2003

    Encrypted: No

    Overall risk rating: Low

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Reported infections: Low

    Damage potential: High

    Distribution potential: Low

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Description:

This backdoor arrives as a file dropped by other malware or downloaded by a user when visiting a malicious Web site. Upon execution, it drops files, which are also detected by Trend Micro as BKDR_CAKL.OF, in the Windows system folder.

It creates registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup. It also modifies certain registry keys to prevent an affected system from successfully restarting in Safe Mode.

It opens a random port to allow a remote malicious user to connect to the affected machine. Once connected, the remote user may then issue certain commands, most of which steal critical system and user information.

And here is what Trend solutions state to do which i did,

Minimum scan engine version needed: 7.500

    Pattern file needed: 3.530.06

Pattern release date: Jun 26, 2006

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Solution:

    Terminating the Malware Program

Since this malware terminates the Windows Task Manager, it is necessary to use third party process viewers such as Process Explorer.

If the process you are looking for is not in the list displayed by Process Explorer, proceed to the succeeding solution set.

    Download Process Explorer.
Extract the contents of the compressed (ZIP) file to a location of your choice.
Execute Process Explorer by double-clicking procexp.exe.
In the Process Explorer window, locate the process:
    VSSMS32.EXE
Right-click the malware process, then click Kill Process Tree.
    Close Process Explorer.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*NOTE: On computers running all Windows platforms, if the process you are looking for is not in the list displayed by Process Explorer, continue with the next solution procedure, noting additional instructions.
    Editing the Registry

This malware modifies the computer's registry. Users affected by this malware may need to modify or delete specific registry keys or entries. For detailed information regarding registry editing, please refer to the following articles from Microsoft:

HOW TO: Backup, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME
HOW TO: Backup, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows NT 4.0
HOW TO: Backup, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows 2000
HOW TO: Back Up, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows XP and Server 2003
    Restoring Modified Registry Keys

In order to completely remove the malware, the system needs to be restarted in Safe Mode. However, it modifies certain registry keys that are essential in successfully running in Safe Mode. The following procedures restore the said modifications.

Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
In the left panel, double-click the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet
    Control>SafeBoot>
Still in the left panel, locate the following key:
    minimal.xxx
Right-click the said key choose Rename and then type the following
    minimal
Still in the same path, locate the following key:
    network.xxx
Right-click the said key choose Rename and then type the following
    network
    Close Registry Editor.
    Restarting in Safe Mode

This malware has characteristics that require the computer to be restarted in safe mode. Go to this page for instructions on how to restart your computer in safe mode.

Removing Autostart Entries from the Registry

Removing autostart entries from the registry prevents the malware from executing at startup.

If the registry entries below are not found, the malware may not have executed as of detection. If so, proceed to the succeeding solution set.

Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
In the left panel, double-click the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>
    Windows>CurrentVersion>Run
In the right panel, locate and delete the entry:
    vssms32 = "%System%\vssms32.exe"
(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, and C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)
Removing Added Entries from the Registry

This will completely undo the modifications made by the malware to your system:

Still in Registry Editor, in the left panel, double-click the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>
    Services>SharedAccess>Parameters>
    FirewallPolicy>StandardProfile>
    AuthorizedApplications>List
In the right panel, locate and delete the entry:
    %System%\vssms32.exe = "%System%\vssms32.exe :*:Enabled:Dnode"
    Close Registry Editor.
    Deleting the Malware File

Right-click Start then click Search... or Find..., depending on the version of Windows you are running.
In the Named input box, type:
    HKR32.ASM
In the Look In drop-down list, select the drive that contains Windows, then press Enter.
Once located, select the file then press Delete.
    Important Windows ME/XP Cleaning Instructions

Users running Windows ME and XP must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of infected computers.

Users running other Windows versions can proceed with the succeeding solution set(s).

    Running Trend Micro Antivirus

If you are currently running in safe mode, please restart your computer normally before performing the following solution.

Scan your computer with Trend Micro antivirus and delete files detected as BKDR_CAKL.OF. To do this, Trend Micro customers must download the latest virus pattern file and scan their computer. Other Internet users can use HouseCall, the Trend Micro online virus scanner.

And here is more on this virus hopefully this helps you help me...

    Installation and Autostart Technique

This backdoor arrives as a file dropped by other malware or downloaded by a user when visiting a malicious Web site. Upon execution, it drops the following files, which are also detected by Trend Micro as BKDR_CAKL.OF, in the Windows system folder:

    ldapi32.exe - injects ntcvx32.dll into the explorer.exe process
ntcvx32.dll - monitors the infected system
ntswrl32.dll - hides the malware process, files and registries
    vssms3.exe - main component
It creates the following registry entry to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
    Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    vssms32 = "%System%\vssms32.exe"

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)

It also creates the following entries to be able to connect to a specific TCP port and IP address:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
    Denese = "62.129.168.91"
    PortNo = "15963"

The said entries are deleted as soon as the malware process is terminated. Moreover, it creates the following registry entry to prevent Windows Firewall from blocking its malicious routines:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
    Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\
    StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List
    %System%\vssms32.exe = "%System%\vssms32.exe :*:Enabled:Dnode"

It also modifies the following registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
    Control\SafeBoot\minimal.xxx

(Note: The default subkey is minimal.)

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
    Control\SafeBoot\network.xxx

(Note: The default subkey is network.)

The said registry keys contain the drivers that are loaded by the system in Safe Mode. Without this data, the computer is not able to load any service and to successfully boot in Safe Mode.

    Backdoor Capabilities

This backdoor opens a random port to allow a remote malicious user to connect to the affected machine. Once connected, the remote user may then issue the following commands:

    List and terminate running processes
Obtain stored passwords from the following applications:
    Firefox
    ICQ
    Internet Explorer
    MSN Messenger
    Outlook
    RAS
Get system information, such as the following:
    Computer Name
    Local host name
Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock settings
    Operating system and language
    Screen resolution
User Name of the currently logged user
    Log keystrokes
    Perform screen capture
All information are then saved to the file HKR32.ASM located in the Windows folder.

    Affected Platforms

This backdoor runs on Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2

There it is now lets see how good you hackers here is your challenge should you choose to take it....

In the furture when you run AVGAS, after it finishes you have to click "Apply all actions".

Restart in safe mode and delete this file:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\[bold]ntcvx32.dll[/bold]

Restart in normal mode and try turning off System Restore. If successful, leave it off until you post the Kaspersky log.

Go here and run Kaspersky Online Scanner.
    Accept the terms.
    After downloading, click "My Computer".
After scanning, click "Save report as".
Save as a text file and post it here.

Well, you only scanned the Windows and your temp folder so, I'm not sure if you're fully clean. You'll need to run it again and this time click [bold]My Computer[/bold] when asked what to scan. If there were confilts between Kaspersky and your anti-virus run ActiveScan instead. But, I don't think System Restore isn't working because of malware still on your computer. After running either Kaspersky or ActiveScan, try repairing Windows with your recovery disc and see if that helps recover System Restore.
