Burn speed vs. Read speed

Hope that the DVD gurus could help me settle these
questions which I have searched wide and deep but
    could not find an answer.

    1/ If a DVD-R is burned at 8x speed, will a stand-
alone player play it back at 8x speed or slower?

2/ Will a stand-alone player wear out faster if
    it plays at faster speed?

3/ On a PC, sometimes you could clearly hear the DVD
player rev'ed up to a very high speed, what happened?
Is there anything I could do to prevent that?

    Many thanks.

burning speed and playback speed have nothing to do with each other. DVDs are locked at a certain speed during playback.

    Thank you very much, Zippyd.
You've helped me settle a question that's on
my mind for a very long time.
Any thoughts on 3/ ? Many times, I heard the
drive just rev'ing up to very high speed after
I inserted a disc. For other discs, it didn't.
