The last five times I tried to backup anything I created coasters. Specifically I am trying to back up my boys SupermanReturns and BrotherBear2 DVDs. I ripped them to my hard drive using DVD decryptor with Ripit4me, then tried numerous times to backup to no avail. At first I thought it might have been Superman DVD so I tried BrotherBear but same thing happens. I have alos tried creating iso files in nero but that doesn't work either. I have been using Fujifilm DVD+R 8 and 16X disc but I only set it to 4x to burn. I have had success with this media in the past. I have a NEC DVD+-R/RW DL burner, never had issues till now. It is probably 1 year old. Could this burner be the culprit. How would I know. I have also tried burning with other software, ie DVD decryptor, IMGBurner, CDBurnerXP Pro all failed. Your looks OK as far as I can see, the only thing I can suggest is to try another brand of disc, I recommend Verbatim or Sony (made in japan)
I am using FujiFilm brand made in Japan. I haven't had any issues with this till now. What can I do to rule out my burner. Its only 1 year old with maybe 50 or so burns.
Both errors from you logs - power calibration error and no seek complete errors can be caused by a few things. One is media and/or firmware not update. Firmware is up to date and made in Japan Fuji is usually made by Taiyo Yuden - great stuff. Can't hurt though to try another brand as Gwen suggested. Even the best can sometimes have a bad batch. Could be a dirty lens on the burner - try a dvd lens cleaner or blow some canned air in the drive to try and clean off the lens. Power supply - maybe a bad connector (?) Try hooking the drive up to another power connector. Another option is if all still fails is to swap this burner in another pc that works (burner wise). If it fails there then the drive is the culprit. Though burning 50 dvds is not much for a burner but nothings perfect Anything change pc wise since you were last able to burn? Keeping up on the pc maintenance bit like disc cleanup, defrag, virus/spyware scans?
I will try your recommendations and get back to this forum. Also, I have a dual boot system to Linux. I will try burning from Linux to eliminate the burner. Any thoughts on this?
Sure give that a go - if you are able to burn the dvd's from Linux then that would lean to a conflict somewhere possibly w/ Windows. You've tried several different burning programs w/ the same results. If still fails then change the power connector and clean of the lens of the burner. Keep us posted.
Just tried Linux k3b software, failed again and made another coaster. The error message said i/o error. I am buying new media, verbatim or sony and trying again. Can I buy DVD+RW so I don't create more coasters. Would my dvd player recognize it. Thanks for all your help. I am starting to suspect it is a hardware issue.
Not a problem on the help. Is looking like a hardware problem but give different media a shot. Most newer dvd players should play RW discs but you can check here: videohelp - dvd players to see if yours does. Just need the make & model.
I used DVD lens cleaner from philips. I went out and bought sony dvd+RW. Bunrned sucessfully according to the log but can not play anything using Showtime or VLC. Actually in my computer the icon that normally shows DVD-RW Drive (Fsays CD Drive. Is this normal?. Also both DVD Decryptor and IsoBuster show the newly burned DVD as a blank DVD-RW. Any ideas what is going n here, I am totally perplexed. Basically the log looks OK, it shows burn as successfull, does the DVD play on your standalone DVD player.
With the disc in the drive & windows changing to a cd drive - that's normally. Not really sure why windows does that. Direct burning: true I'd turn burn at once off - better to have Nero encode the files and store temporarily then it will start the burn. May be the reason you have several of these in the log: (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST) Do you have another pc you can try this drive in?

It would be on a 16x burner if this wasn't +RW - some of that format the highest burn speed is 2.4x. But the booktyping error your pointed out just might be the reason for the KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST's in the log. I think this would happen if the booktyping option was set to automatic or DVD-Rom. You can change it to physical format.
Ok, I booted the computer with the disc still in the drive. When the drive came too, it said BrotherBear2. I ejected and tried playing ths in my stand alone dvd player it played perfectly. I loaded the DVD back into my pc drive and it came back with CD drive. DVD decrytpor and Isobuster also say this disc is empty. What gives guys. I can play audio CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, CD-Rs. Drive does not see DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL. I do not have DVD-R media. What if I try reflashing this drive back to 1.05 or just 1.06 again. Anyone think that could help.
binkie you are saying on the first burns are dvdr and they burnt at 4x and the 2.4 burn is due to dvdrw media.
@jcarroca The drive could still be going - I have one drive that does the same thing (laptop drive though)- will burn it then not always recognize it but will usually be playable on a dvd player. The cd drive showing is ok - that's not a problem. You can always try going back a version in firmware and see what happens. Just maybe the 1.06 has a bug in it. If you have any of the 16x media left I would try burning that at 8x instead of 4x and see how that goes. Some higher speed media does not do well at low speeds depending on the firmware of the drive. @born2ride You got it - correct!
