my disk has a slight scratch and fails to copy after 26% what can i do to get over this. Also can rental dvd shops tell if I've tried to copy it. Or ps2 games someone told me they can and i'll get slammed in the slammer.

Which software are you using? Sometimes using another burn program might help. For example, I have salvaged quite a few scratched DVDs with Nero, while other programs have failed.

..To copy a disc you first have to read it. The info is then stored on the hard drive(for most of us) and backed up from there. So all you have done to the disk is played(read) it.
    ..DVD Decrypter might work also.

.. Try these settings for DVD Decrypter.
First, it should be version 3.5.1.0.

Open Decrypter, click on Tools, then Settings

    Click on Defaults, then select these;

    General tab
Options - Removal Method - Aggressive

    File Mode tab
Options - Remove PUOs (IFO and/or VOB)

    ISO Read Mode tab
Options - Remove PUOs (IFO and/or VOB)

    CSS tab
CSS Cracking Method - Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange

    On Failure - Yes

    IMPORTANT:
    I/O tab
    Options - Ignore read errors.

This is an excellent setting for dealing with scratched discs which may cause ripping problems.

No rental shop can tell a dvd was copied. You are actually just reading the dvd during the first part of the copy process so its no different than playing it.
