In other words, the track cuts off a second or two early + jumps right to the next song.
Does anybody what's causing this? Is it an issue with the burning software?

    geezer5,
Yes, this depends on how your burning software is set up. If you have Nero, then you can use either Nero Express or Nero Burning ROM to adjust the gap between tracks or completely remove pauses in between. However, this can only be accomplished for Audio CDs and not data CD/DVD.
Once, you've added all the files, highlight all. Right click; Properties; under Track Propeties Tab adjust the value of pauses. Steps may be a tad bit different depending on what version of Nero you have.

Or you can choose to eliminate gaps in between tracks this way...

Thanks for the helpful info. I think I traced the affected discs to a batch I burned using the Winamp burning software.

You're welcome! Do you have Nero by any chance?

No, I actually use an older version of Sonic RecordNow for most burning. Haven't had any problems with it.

Is there a similar setting in Sonic?

I just enable the Disc-At-Once setting.
