error message--what does it mean

    In alot of my programs I get a box popping up that says"this program has encountered a problem and needs to close". Why does this happen and can I do anything to prevent it?

    when was last time you did a scan disk & defrag, also clean out your cookies, temp & temporary internet folders 1st
