    What is your drive?

It updates the original Firmware that comes with the writer and can allow you to rip discs faster and have region free, if you get a firmware hack.

try the firmware forum at rpc1.forums.org

They dont seem to have an Altec update, you can check it out here:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Best thing is to sign up and ask the question in one of the forums. It is very handy and it may enable you to burn those cheaper discs...

Your firmware is the symbolic arrangement of data or instructions in a computer program or the set of such instructions that you flash to your drive. My personal advice is to do a websearch first with the following search indicators:

MODEL OF DRIVE MEDIA TYPE (discs you use) FIRMWARE
    E.G. I searched for Liteon LDW-411S RitekG04 FIRMWARE

That will enable you find links to opinions of how the different firmware versions available for your drive work with your chosen media. Update to the best firmware and with a bit of luck your problem might already be solved.

This is a good link for obtaining firmware:
http://dhc014.rpc1.org/ Or simply go to the manufacturor's website. You may also need a flashing program which can also be found on that site together with instructions.

Hi zSURGEz, If you download DVDinfopro and click on the drive icon, it may show you who manufactured your burner drive. First line will show Altec 8x, second line will show something like Pioneer 107D if thats who made the drive. This will help locate firmware updates and hacks.
