first off, my computer right now is kind of old, so im upgrading some parts. and right now i have a cd read and write drive. thats it..no dvd drive or anything. so im planning on getting a DVD±R drive for it and im wondering, how would i know what type to get that is compatible with my motherboard? im new in the area of drives so im unfamiliar with this. also, how much would it cost at an average for a part like this?

I would suspect that any IDE drive would work with your drive. Find one of the free versions of Everest at "major geeks" and run it to find out your system specs and then do some research at NewEgg for a drive that is compatable.

LG, Pioneer and Lite-On are always strong choices.

being an older PC I'm sure you have an IDE optical drive. so replace it with an IDE drive yes

    as said brands like

    Lite-On
    Pioneer
    or Samsung

    are good

they will run about 25.00 to 35.00 dollars at http://newegg.com
