how to convert vcd to avi

hello im trying to convert vcd to avi. what is the best why todo this and with what software.thank you for any help.

 

Copy the mpeg1 file from the VCD.
It's in the MPEGAV folder and will be a .dat file.
Open the .dat file in 'Any Video Converter' (free version).
Choose AVI as the output file.

It's free.
It does go home each time it runs and lets you know if there is an update and after each conversion it asks if you want to upgrade to the Pro version - however I also run it on another machine with an outgoing firewall and although it mentions that it cannot connect, it still functions without complaint.
