the navagation disk in the cars. the disk is written a certain way where it works with the satalite. but when i try to copy with nero, it will only do dvd-r. no options for dvd-rom. the system will not be able to use the disk if it is not a dvd-rom

Oh I see, but it is not Nero that won't burn a +R and booktype it to a DVD ROM disk. It is your DVDRW that is resposible for this. What is the make and model of your DVDRW drive?

As bbmayo said your drive is what booktypes the +R discs. I don't know if the Sonys can booktype. It's not listed in the Booktyping option area of Decrypter which can set booktyping for your drives.

Lately all of the Sony drives are rebadged Lite-ons or Benq drives, but I couldn't find your drive reviewed doing a quick Google search. I'm sure that it can be set to booktype as a DVD-Rom disk, make sure that you use good media, Taiyo or Verb to be sure and burn at half the rated speed. If it is a data type disk, Clone CD works wonders on these, you can download a free 21 day trial download here
this will copy DVD disks and get thru the copy protection. Hope this helps. If you go under Nero, you can set the booktyping for your burner to DVD-Rom and clone will accept the settings. Try it and see if it works for your drive, I have two Lite-ons and they work with this method (Sony DRU-800a is one of them)
