I want to back-up my DVD collection.

I want to back-up my DVD collection. I want to make a byte to byte copy (not video capturing or compression) of the original DVD that will play in my home player. Anyone know how to do this? My understanding is I need to purchase a DVD burner (which burner?) modify the drive so it can read into the lead area of the DVD where the CSS code is stored and copy it to my hard drive, then back onto a blank DVD (which media? DVD-r/w , DVD-r, DVD+r/w). Thanks.
