Hello all! I was searching around google for people with the same problem as I have and I ended up here :)

Anyway, I ran a Belarc Computer Profile scan and I have verified that I have these:

HP DVD Writer 300c [CD-ROM drive]
    IDE DVD-ROM 16X [CD-ROM drive]

On the HP dvd writer drive, I can play DVDs, Burn CDs, and it recognizes CDs, however it won't burn DVDs. I'm trying to burn a a movie I made from camcorder clips of a graduation and the DVD burner doesn't seem to work. When I put in a blank DVD, the choices it gives me is to Burn Audio to CD, Open Writable CD, and Create a Disk using one of my CD burning programs. It comes up as a CD Drive also.

How would I be able to burn DVDs again? Thanks in advance!

You may want to consider updating your drive's firmware. Use this firmware.

Once you have updated, if the problem persists, get back to us.

I just went through this with my burner. It stopped seeing all disc's. I went to device manager uninstalled the drive, then rebooted. Windows will "found new hardware" and install hardware & drivers. After I did this, all was well again.

Hi, I tried both of your suggestions and the DVD RW drive still comes up as a CD Drive with the options of Burning a CD, Make a Music Disk, etc...

Uninstall the secondary IDE controller and reboot.

    Hi ;-)
    Welcome smiffy16.
    Couple of questions,
Does it say CD drive after media inserted? If so this is a common fault of windows.
What s/w do you have for burning? It is likely that if it's windows, then it only allows cd burning.
If this is the case get something like Nero.
If not tell us the s/w you have.
    TIA.

Ahh... Thanks again you guys the HP computer DVD Burner is now fixed (after a firmware update and use of Nero), but I have seem to have encountered a new problem.

My Toshiba M45-S165 Laptop won't burn DVDs either. I tried looking for firmware, but it wasn't for a Toshiba computer, it was for a Sony VAIO. Then I uninstalled my

    MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-840S [CD-ROM drive]

in the System and I rebooted my computer. I tried again with the Sonic RecordNow program, but it didn't work. I don't know what's been up with my laptop lately, it has been working fine until now. :( Thanks again for all your help guys! Maybe I should turn to Nero again?

Here is the latest firmware update for that drive..
Make sure when you update your firmware there is nothing else running and that there is no disc in your drive.

You might want to try Nero but I haven't used Sonic RecordNow, so wouldn't knwo what it's like/how to use it/

Alright I downloaded that driver, but it says that this is the

    F/W Loader for VAIO UJ-840 and I have a Toshiba M45-165 Laptop.

I have no programs running, and it asked me to open the disk drive, and I did. After that, it says that F/W Loader does not apply to the DVD/CD-RW drive that you are using. Press exit to continue.

    Then I exit.

    Thanks zebadee,

But the only DVD related download with my laptop model is for the Acoustic silencer.
