check your device manager for a yellow exclamation mark

if you used a cd cleaner disk & no yellow exclamation mark in device manager, try removing drive from device manager, restart windows to let it install driver & see what happens. possible drive just gave up the ghost. how old is drive & if still under warranty

My drive dissapeared again after a few days on a boot up. I had to restore my system to a previous date and now it seems stable. If you want to do that put in "system restore" in the "help and support" search and follow the wizard.
Not a great solution but it seems to work. I also uninstalled a program for pulling pics from a digital camera that I had recently installed because I was getting an error message that indicated I had a corrupt driver and that was the last program I installed.
    good luck...

thanks for that but the DVD-Rom was no good and Sony came by my house and replace it, now this one reads at 16x.
