I want to buy a DVD-+R but I dont know if I should go for a single or double layer unit? Both single and double units cost the same. Can a double layer DVDR burn single layer DVD as well as a single layer burner?

Go dual layer. You wont need to shrink DVDs and you can fit more information on them,.
