Sony won't play all-region dvds

I just purchased a Sony DVP-NS77H upconvert player for my new LCD tv. It works fine except when I try to play Region 2 dvds that I copied through AnyDVD to make no-region. These dvds play OK in my Pioneer and Panasonic players, but I get a message on the Sony, "Playback prohibited by area Limitations."
Is there any solution other than getting rid of the Sony.

The DVD's, although they are 'all region' or 'region free', are still PAL format.
Are you in North America (NTSC) and does this player handle PAL format?

I live in North America. The Pioneer player I have is region free, but the Panasonic is region 1.

Disks from region 2 are PAL format.
Even though the DVD's have been ripped and are region free, the ripped files are PAL and would have to be converted to NTSC unless the standalone player can play PAL video.
